ENTERTAINMENT FIRST TOUR _IN FIVE YEARS Bowie is back in subdued style LONDON (REUTER) — David Bowie, singer, musician, actor and rock star, has embarked on his first concert tour in five years — and his fans are loving it. Tho 36-year-old British star has just begun a series of performances that will take him to 90 cities in Europe, the United States and Canada and provide a total audience of over two million people in four months, Promoters in London are hailing the tour as one of the most successful ever, saying it outstrips previous outings by two other legendary names, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, in terms of record sales and demand for tickets. Over halfa million applications were received for the 250,000 tickets available for his nine British concerts earlier this month and on the black market tickets were snapped up at $310 each, 20 times their face value. Magazines, T-shirts, badges and souvenir programs are also selling rapidly, said Patrick Humphries, one of Bowie's publicity agents. All 25 dates for the U.S. concerts in September are already sold out and the 20,000 seats for his appearance at New York’s Madison Square Garden were gone in a day, Humphries said. JAPAN INCLUDED Although there were originally no plans for Bowie to perform in Japan, where he has a huge popular following, Humphries said it was likely that some extra concerts would be added there. The Canadian dates are: Quebec City, July 11; Montreal, July 12-18; Edmonton, Aug. 6; Vancouver, Aug. 8 A date for a Toronto concert is still to be confirmed. Born plain David Jones in the deprived south London suburb of Brixton, Bowie first achieved international Tesngnition in 1969 and soon became famous for his wild and fabulous creations of characters such as the demonic Ziggy Stardust, the dandy Aladdin Sano and the leering dilettante, the thin White Duke. But fans who may have beon expecting another fantastic creation this time find instead a new, suave Bowle, simply dressed in an elegant suit, Gone are the glitter, the garrish theatrical makeup, the Lurex jumpsuits and the multicolored hairstyles: of the late 1970s, ‘A man of few words, he rarely gives interviews but explained the radical change of direction to one music lolescent I was painfully shy, withdrawn. I decided to do my songs in disguise so that I didn't have to actually go through the humiliation of going on stage and being myself. “When I first started doing characterizations, pres- enting different acts with every tour, it was a challenge, unorthodox and‘a risk, “But it got'to the point where it was no longer a risk. This tour is a risk in that there's nothing much to follow in those kind of terms.” ' The only theatrics in his so-called Serious Moonlight show are 4 large pointing hand and a dented glittering moon adorning the ‘stage,’ and a non-stop blitz of spectacular lighting effects. é Similarly, where once Bowie Soncerta were distin- guished by the weird and wonderful attire of his fans, they now are frequented by an ordinarily dressed audience ranging in age from 14 to 40. And judging by their reaction, Bowie has lost none of his appeal. Part of Bowie's success seems to lie in his ability to change his musical style to suit the times without losing the ae of his own remarkable individuality. “Hyde reveals cult world By ROD CURRIE TORONTO (CP) — Novel- ist Christopher Hyde lives a pastoral, lobster-and-cream life in Prince Edward Island, and spends his time concoct- ing devilish plots of big-city intrigue. Fans who were glued to the pages of The Wave and The Icarus Seal will find a subtle change of pace in The Tenth Crusade, a new (BBY; i about. an. ‘odious religious cult. The plot revolves around Philip Kirkland, a James Bond-type swashbuckling photographer, who makes his revolutions. But'now he’s be- tween assignments, lollin; around in his Soho loft apart- ment in Manhattan, when his only true love from the past, Heather Foxcroft, shows up. Just as abruptly she disappears, and the hunt it on. Kirkland believes.she has been swallowed up by a sinister cult and he joins forces with a research histor- ian who is trying to prove that the same cult was res- Ponsible for her father's death. CHASE IS ON In true’ Hyde style, it's a harrowing chase studded~ with violence, terror and de- ceit and it takes them from northern New York state to Toronto, Colorado, San Fran- cisco and elsewhere. But the whole thing, as we later discover, was a put-up '@ job. The pursued orches- trated it all, allowing the pursuers to escape each time the trap seems about to be sprung. In reality, the cult master- minds were playing with them, leading them on to the great finale in Washington, where they are to play the key role ina master plan that would bring the cult respec- tability — and power. As always, Hyde's material is well researched and he takes the reader into the world of television religion, right-wing paramilitary groups and what he believes is the growing, unchecked power of the fundamentalist lobby in government. But Hyde, an Ottawa-born former journalist, goes be- yond that, into the chilling operation of the Tenth Cru- sade, a militant, quasi-reli- gious cult bent on overthrow- ing a corrupt society. The crusaders believe that the only way for a totali- tarian government to suc- ceed in the U.S. is for it to be elected. Under the scheme, the Tenth Crusade would be accepted by the public as a semi-official police group that would bring about -a fully “Christian America” within three years.
