co __ Castlégar Nev February 26, 1986 Driver reports | your hit and run cow TORONTO (CP) — Amid the usual dry reading of balance sheets and annual the Aetna Casu- alty and Surety Co. of Hartford, Conn., has brought a lighter note. Aetna, in listing some of its more unusual insurance claim reports, said it was advised, for example, that a client “reported hit and run. He hit cow. Cow got up and ran.” ‘Then there was a cus- tomer who went to a car wash and handed her keys to an employee. “He drove off and hasn't been seen since.” ‘There was the report that a “claimant's fingers were injured when fun The was a ride at a children's amusement centre. FOLLOWED LEADER Then there was the flock of 70 or so sheep that duti- fully followed its leader up, over and around a car owned by a hapless Aetna policy holder in Texas. The stunned motorist reported the incident this way: “I was driving alone and, all of a sudden, it looked like sheep almost descended from heaven.” The car, the policy hold er reported, suffered “dents all over from hooves and stuff.” The claims representa tive seeking to establish liability asked if the state police had charged anyone. She was told “No, there were just the sheep, and being dumb animals, | don’t think you can cite them.” And one Aetna policy holder had a hard luck tale to recite about driving home one night in a snow storm. Because of icy roads, he said he was unable to stop and plowed into two cars already involved in a colli sion. His problems increased when a policeman answer. ing the accident call was also unable to stop and his car ran into the claimant's. Just to put a perfect end to a perfect night, a tow truck coming to the aid of the motorists missed the police car but smashed into the Aetna policy holders’. Motorhome new summer EDMONTON (CP) favorite — The motorhome isn’t yet king of the road but it’s fast becoming a motel on wheels for summer vacationers across Canada. Frustrated travellers, their children screaming in close quarters in the car wondering when they'd get to the next motel, are starting to take their motel room along by renting motorhomes. “It's probably a little more expensive than taking your car and staying in motels, but there’s no comparison in the freedom and atmosphere,” says Gary Sorge, a motorhome dealer. Businesses claim the motorhome is better because it's spacious. The kids aren't cramped. And renting the vehicles can be cheaper than using your own car, staying in motels and eating in restaurants. There are no fewer than 11 motorhome rental companies listed in the Edmonton yellow pages and they cater to both local vacationers and visitors from the U.S. and Europe. Go Vacations has grown from a small camper rental dealership in Thornhill, Ont., when it started 14 years ago, to become the largest renter of motorhomes and houseboats in the world. The firm has 70 motorhomes at its outlet in nearby Nisku, Alta., and 300 families per year take the vehicles on their vacations across North America, said president Geoff Graves. He said renting a motorhome isn't an inexpensive holiday. But parents with kids who want to preserve their sanity usually are willing to pay for pace of mind, he adds. “The kids have lots of room to move around while you're on the road and you have the freedom to stop where you like,” he said in an interview. Sorge, a systems analyst who's been renting motorhomes to vacationers for the past six years, said renting rather than buying makes economic sense. “Most people, unless they're retired, only go camping a couple of times a year, so buying a motorhome doesn’t make much sense,” he said. Sorge, a native of Ontario, said he started renting motorhomes when he and his wife, Kathy, moved to Alberta. “We found there aren't many lodges or hotels on the lakes here like there are in Ontario, so we tried the motorhomes,” he said. “Now I wouldn't do anything else. “You can park it right by the lake; you just don't get the same feeling staying in a motel.” There are some problems, Sorge said. If you plan on visiting some large cities, manoeuvring around in a motorhome can present some difficulties.
