May 14, 1986 DUKE LABELLED ‘HELPLESS WEAKLING' LONDON (AP) — The Love Letters of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor take a lot of the magic out of one of the great romances of the 20th century. British psych and media tors say the ex-king comes across as an immature weakling and the American divorcee he gave up the British throne for as a strong-willed social climber who was as much a mother as a wife. The Duchess, who died at her Paris home April 24 at the age of 89, wanted their love letters published to appeal what she saw as the unfair verdict of history — that she seduced a king into abandoning his duty and giving up his throne. The letters show that King Edward VIII was obsessed by Wallis Warfield Simpson; that he ignored her pleas to end their relationship; pushed her into a divorce and refused a final plea not to abdicate. The Daily Mail is reported to have paid the equivalent of $750,000 U.S. for the serialization rights to the letters and is polling its readers on whether they believe she was “an adventuress” or “a victim.” Others have already reached a verdict The Daily Mirror said the one thing the world wasn't prepared for in the letters “was the embarrassing ordinariness of this historic couple. “The Duke shows himself to bé a helpless weakling with a mother fixation and Wallis emerges as a rather empty mixed-up social climber,” the tabloid said. “No longer can their affairs be seen as the grand passion that nearly brought down the monarchy. In future they will be viewed as two spoiled kids who couldn't bear to have their sweets taken away,” the paper said. She was 41 and he was 43 when they married on June 3, 1937, six months after his abdication. But in their letters they refer to each other as “the girl” and “the boy.” Five psychologists interviewed im the press generally echo the Daily Mirror assessment. DUKE IMMATURE’ Dr. Tony Whitehead, consultant psychologist at Bevendean Hospital in Brighton, said: “He was immature, particularly sexually, and she says so in at least one on her letters. This immaturity certainly gives the appearance of latent lity. She was ing and selfishly ambitious, always dictating and expecting everyone else to conform to what she wanted. “Both were self-centred, concerned only with them selves. People around them were playthings. In the end she lost control because she was trapped — either marry and stay, or vanish into obscurity and relative poverty. He, too, lost the game. He had to abdicate and accept all that followed,” Whitehead wrote in the Daily Express. For several 's, Edward's is blessing. Under the headline Edward E ine said his i “was the best thing that could have happened for his country . . . (but) anybody who had said this then would have seemed crazy.” Commentator John Akass, writing in the Daily Express, said: “We might easily have ended up with a dynasty founded by a lounge-lizard and an adventures.” Nonetheless, there was sympathy for the Duke and Duchess because of the way they were treated by Britain's royal family, which ostracized them and left them in virtual exile — a sore point discussed at length in the letters. The letters are being published in book form on May 15 in Britain by Weidenfeld and Nicolson, with the title Wallis and Edward, Letters 1931-37, edited by Michael Bloch. was a the Unready, the Calgary firms sack lawyers CALGARY (CP) — Hard economic times have forced the layoffs of 20 lawyers in the first large staff cuts by major Calgary law firms in at least 20 years. Observers are blaming the depth of the recession in the local economy for law firms cutting associates, articling students and secretaries. More layoffs are pected. Lawyers in the city say they can't remember the last time any of their colleagues were laid off in such num bers. John Soby, a prominent family lawyer whose work is not directly affected by the recession, said the cuts are “pretty grim from what I'm hearing.” “It's unprecendented for law firms to lay off people in these numbers,” Soby said “I've never heard of it in 20 years.” For university students hoping to become lawyers the situation is grim, with far fewer finding law firms pre. pared to article them when they graduate. William MeFetridge, a lawyer who handles unfair dismissal cases, said he has been consulted by three lawyers involved in current sackings and expects to hear from more. He has advised two to take legal action for inadequate dismissal notice. “It's an indication of the depth of the recession and in some ways of how serious the ott price —drop—is seen.” MeFetridge said of the lay. offs. “People were shocked they would let people that talented go.” The world price of oil has dropped to less than $15 a ex barrel from $30 U.S., the major underlying fact behind the slump in the Alberta economy. MeFetridge said some of the lawyers being laid off are competent, experienced legal staff who are assets to their firms. He blamed the recession for the staff cuts. “The thing these firms all have in common is their large oil and gas assounts.” Bennett Jones, one -of Calgary's largest law firms, will see five lawyers go in the coming months as a result of its recent year-end review. Another large firm, Burnet, Duckworth and Palmer, is said to be letting nine lawyers and seven stu dents go, as well as 20 secretaries. A third firm, Macleod Dixon, has asked six assoc- iate lawyers to look for work elsewhere, said Rob Rowley, a partner in the firm. He said two other lawyers were let go earlier in the year and four of 13 articling students will be laid off, although 10 new ones are being taken on this year. Rowley said that with 100 lawyers in Macleod Dixon, the numbers going are relatively small. REVIEWS THE FIELD Bill Britton, managing partner at Bennett Jones, said through a routine annual review carried out at this time five staff are being let go from his firm through a combination of resignations and terminations. Britton acknowledges all businesses are affected by the recession in the oil industry, but plays down the significance of this in his decision to cut staff.
