Under the plan, board mem- bers across the province will be fired and replaced with people ap- pointed for a maximum of six That doesn't necessorily simply only this time for a six- But while there is something to be said in favor of appointing board members — namely that it removes the board from political infighting that can occur on munici- pal councils or school boards — clearly that does not outweigh the benefits of a democratically elec- ted board. The biggest concern with ap- pointing members is that the ap- intments may be made on the basis of political affiliation with the government of the day. Even if the province impartially appoints board members, there is the con- cern that.the members could be removed if something they should say or do displeases the govern- ment. problems 1t is hard to understand why in @ democracy where we elect our school boards, regional districts, municipal councils, provincial gov- ernments, federal governments and .even our hospital boards (though that is through society membership), we can't choose our own college boards. One of the problems Selkirk College has faced over the years is a. lack, of community interest. Perhaps if residents had more ota direct hand in operating the college that ity interest Castlegar Nowe , Ata well-attended meeting in Edge- wood recently, Ed Shields gave & his meeting ators so situated, the management license. (fe captiva' ates of F scene, in which the pirates bid farewell Letters to the Editor would surface. The other problem with the new college board structure is the six-year time lintit. From what local board members told the Cas- tlegar News in an article this week, it takes members three or four years to begin to understand all the issues. And it is presumably, the ex- perienced board members who also go on to sit on the provincial body, the B.C. Association of Col- leges. By removing experienced board members from the local boards, and thus the provincial body, the province is eftectively removing those who could have valuable input. But then maybe that's what was intended. Mask - returned Six years ago the front porch of the chapel house on Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park was completely des- troyed. About that time the figure above the arch which had been carved by Alexander Zuckerberg and known locally as the “Medusa mask,” dis- appeared. It was a great Joss since it was an essential part of the house. This morning it reappeared at the house and many people are going to be very pleased. It is also an excellent omen and reflects the growing com- munal sense of partnership in the restoration of the chapel house and the island. May I, therefore, through the Castlegar News, and on behalf of the Mallcomments upsetting After reading J.H. Byer’s comments on the new mall being built in Castle- gar (March 15 CasNews), it left me feeling somewhat upset. Certainly, I will respect his views and feelings but there are more pros than cons in dealing with this issue. Kids run I wonder whether or not J.H. Byer’s or a close friends has a business of his own, or why would he feel so threa- tened? The mall “is” much needed! We need to expand Castlegar and let it grow, not shrink. Sure the economy is suffering but are we supposed to run in front of moving trains I am a very frustrated person and need your help. I work as a locomotive engineer for CP Rail out of Nelson and travel to different locations. In the past — and even now — I have had children run in front of my moving train and in one incident fall between the rails. I've had children crossing under my train when I was stopped for just a short period. I've had children cross through —my train: T'vehad totive-with~ citizens of Castlegar and the Heritage Advisory Committee, thank the an- onymous donor who has kept the Medusa safe all these years and re- turned her for placement where she belongs. John A. Charters, Chairman Castlegar Heritage Advisory Committee Will they learn? When will they ever learn! The Liberal Party and its leaders are still using the same false argument to defend U.S. cruise missile tests in Canada as they did under Pierre Trudeau and his Liberal government four years ago with the support of the Conservative opposition. The only difference now is that it is the Mulroney Conservative govern- ment that has renewed, for five years, the agreement to test the cruise in Canada — this time with the over- whelming support of John Turner and this Liberal Party in parliament. And both continue to justify their stand with the same false argument, namely, Opposed to death penalty I am writing to express my Oppo sition to the possible imposition of the death penalty in Canada Throughout the years this contro versial problem has been raised, I have kept silent because I trusted in the good, sane and compassionate decisions of our legislatures. However, lately I am becoming worried about our violent world situation and feel obligated to speak out about this issue I shall not try to persuade with the many arguments as to why I am against this proposal as I feel sure they have been heard before, so I shall simply say that I am a true believer in the philosophy of non-violence and that I am proud of the respect that Canada has enjoyed among all nations and that this respect will be diminished if we re impose capital punishment Violence begets violence Pat Romaine Castlegar that the tests “fulfill part of Canada’s commitment to NATO.” False! It is almost four years now since I, as the then MP for Kootenay West (NDP), was ejected from the House of Commons for refusing to withdraw a repeated, clear, and unequivocal-state- ment that prime minister Trudeau had “repeatedly lied to the House of Commons and the Canadian people” by claiming a NATO commitment to test the cruise, despite admissions from some government spokesmen that it was not true. My accusation is as true now as it was then and both Turner and Mulroney, the tiiberals and the Tories, all know it. As I said in the House of Commons at the time, there may be an argument for cruise tests here — how- ever ill-advised — but an imaginary “commitment” is not it. Having.been a Canadian delegate to numerous inter- national NATO parliamentary meet- ings, I know first-hand that the over- riding concern of almost all Liberal and Conservative representatives attend- ing has been to procure an increased Canadian share of Amercian defence research and defence production con. tracts — almost solely for Central Canada. ‘That is the prime reason for Can- ada’s agreement to test and continue testing the U.S. cruise missile and the Liberals and Tories both know it. So let's cut out the false claims and allow Canadians to debate and decide the issue on its merits. Have some faith in Canada, John and Brian! Judging by recent polls, more and more Canadians are finally beginning to realize that both Tories and Liberals are incompatible with good govern ment and socio-economic justice. But can't we at least have some honesty and integrity — if not in the govern ment at least in the official oppostion? Canadians, it seems, will have to take the bull by the horns and make a real choice for a change.
