Workers, mostly women, earn an average of only $8,900 annually Housekeepers, waitresses, bartenders and farm laborers all earn more than day-care workers, Statistics Canada said in announcing the coun try’s 10 worst-paid jobs. Although governments help pay for day care through a complicated system of sub- sidies, the financial pressure on middle-income families won't go away, says the Can. adian Day Care Advocacy Association. “It's parents ih ‘the middle- Prices in effect Wed., May 11th While MON Children’s Outerwear Y2 PRICE ore & more off the original price selected of Suereen’ for “infants, 29x, Git "s 7-14, Boys’ 8-16. Committee. research also showed orily families with incomes over $51,000 a year can afford to pay for unsub- sidized day care anywhere in Canada. “And ven in the top 20 per cent, ‘families over the $81,000 a year level, with two or three children might not have enough” without gov- ernment assistance, Cleve- land added. “The demand for care will continue to rise and child- care workers are unionizing because they're fed up with low -wage scales,” Corbeil- Vincent said. “Some of thera are leaving the field, putting the number of trained work- ers at a premium. “If the number of qualified workers drops, centres can’t accept as many children because they can't meet the ratio of staff members to children set out in provincial regulations. If spaces are empty, centres will increase fees to parents to make up for the money lost in empty spaces.” Bev McDowell, an Ottawa day-care worker, said wages remain low partly because child care is stili a female job ghetto and society hasn't recognized working with children as deserving of high wages. at = en shen tops.
