It's-something that ngbody likes to think about, yet we see it played out in the news every day; a child is lost or a hiker dis- appears, a boat is missing or an aircraft is overdue. Behind the scenes of these potential tragedies are dozens of dedicated volunteers. These are the unsung heros. The course will be planned for either evenings or weekends in order to accommodate the most people. The course is transferable to any SAR group in BC and includes certification in basic First Aid. “It works out well for a lot of people,” English says, “because Putting a face to search and rescue Castlegar emergency team starting up — CHAD ENGLISH Search and Rescue much lower cost than other courses and they know they are involved in something impor- tant as well.” English also hopes to run Radio Operators and Rope. Aside from the lack of trained volunteers, Castlegar SAR also struggles with a lack of equip- ment. “We are working on rais- ing funds for the purchase of some basic mountain rescue gear and a communications sys- tem.
