We're The Inside Guy& When it Comes 10 entertaining top-notch high school volleyball, there can be no doubt that the cup runneth over for Mt. Sentinel Sec. ondary School in South Slocan. Mt. Sentinel has had a long tra- dition of great volleyball teams and the best showcase of their tal- ent as well as the best talent in the province is seen annually at the Mt. Sentine! Cup. The 13th Annual Mt. Sentinel Cup starts this Friday at Mt. Sen- tinel and Selkirk College and it once again.features some of the highest calibre high school volley- ball teams in the province. Ten boys and ten girls teams will take part in the two-day tourney which features last year's Provincial Boys ‘AAA' Champions from K.L.O. Secondary School in Kelowna. Tournament organizer and Mt Sentinel athletic director Joe Mor- eira is excited about having the Kelowna team in the tournament, “On the boys side, K.L.O. is by far the best team in the province,” said Moreira. “In fact, I would say they are one of the best teams the province has had in a long time.” The Mt. Sentinel boys team has had both high and low points to start this season but they are looking forward to the tournament Coach Dave Olynyk has been working hard with the tcam all week in prepa- ration for the tournament but will see a tough test right off the bat as his team faces K.L.O. at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon. Despite K.L.O."s apparent power and the high potential for embarrassment, the coaching staff feels they will have a chance at victory since the entire student population Will be in attendance at the games “We're delighted and, at the same time, somewhat concerned because of the strength of the K.L.O team,” said Moreira. “But if there is a time we're going to beat them that will be it. We're also looking forward to bringing an entertaining game to the students, “It's high school volleyball at its best. And we're willing to take those risks.”” oe Other senior boys teams attending the tournament will include J.L. Crowe (Trail), Nechako Valley (Vanderhoof), David Thompson (Invermere), Selkirk (Kimberley), L.V. Rogers (Nelson), Mt. Baker (Cran- brook), Revelstoke and Prince Charles (Kelowna). On the girls side, Mt. Sentinel will have strong opposition from K_L.O., Selkirk and Nechako Val- ley. Coach Moreira has a young and inexperienced team this year but still hopes to be competitive. “We're a building team but I anticipate that we are strong enough to be competitive,” said Moreira. “ If I were to bet I'd say Kimberley will be the team to beat.”” Teams from Oliver, Prince George and Surrey also find themselves in the girls draw which will begin play at 2 p.m. in the Selkirk College gym The girls switch to Mt. Sentinel tournament, but it all begs the question - how can such a small high school keep attracting such great teams from around the province? “One reason that comes to mind is that we have two coaches who have been around a long time and have a lot of contacts throughout the province,” said Moreira. “Second, we have a rep- utation for having a good pro- SUN STAFF PHOTO /Jetf Gabert gram. Thirdly, year after year we put together a well organized tournament. “All of that combined makes it a nice tournament and year after year teams look forward to com- ing here.” And Moreira looks forward to putting it on... most of the time. “It's a lot of work and a few days leading up you wonder why you do this to yourself,” said Mor- eira. “but there is a certain amount of satisfaction knowing we can bring the good teams in and put on a high class tournament.” = IT JUST F mazDa LS RIGHT 1.9” month s. ve LIMir FINANCING* Blue Key Days! 5 for 36 months. Now, the time has come to say goodbye. But before tears are shed as the 14 students from the Canada World Youth Exchange program say private good- byes to their respective host families, the group held a pub- lic showing of their acting and musical talents in a bid to ally thank the residents and cs of Castlegar for making students are from India and = and after their three-month stay in Casticgar, are now heading to a location in India where they will again stay with host families for another three months. “Castlegar has been wonderful to us and we thought this show would be a great way to say thank you,” said Meena Yadav, 22, a commerce student from the University of Luc- know in central India. All 14 exchange students had been working on the musical skit for several weeks, and when the 250 plus audience crowded into the activity room at Stanley Humphries Secondary School, they were not disappointed. The show opened with a narrative and colourfully dressed young women, who moved exotically to the music from their homeland — India. The story centered around a young Canadian man who Top photo: After an impressive perfor- mance to a capacity crowd, members of the Canada World Youth Exchange give a happy thumbs up! Left photo: It won't be long before this exchange student from India will be saying goodbye to his young ‘host-brother’ from the Castlegar area. Right photo: A big highlight of the evening was the traditional Indi- travels to India searching for his sister, who, after visiting the country immerses herself in its culture and forgets to write home. The young man is befriended by a young Indi- an and the result is a comical awakening for both, as they discover the misconceptions that each has about the other's homeland. On several occasions throughout the play, com- ments were made upon Canada’s cur- rent social and political climate, including the possibility of Quebec separation. The results were positive, and the young actors and actresses received a standing ovation at the end of their impressive performance. Backstage there were hugs and laughter, and cries of “We did it!” But along with the joy was a feeling of sad- Ness, as the students know that good- byes were soon to come. “It will be hard to say goodbye to our host families, they have become very special to us all,” said one young Indian student. “It's hard to think about it actually, without feeling sad.” Story and photos by Sharlene Imhoff MX-3 PRECIDIA © 1.6L DOHC 16-vaive engine Available V6 © Power-assisted rack-and: pinion steering © Tilt steering PROTEGE ‘S Variable-assist power steering * 60/40 split fold-down rear seat back © Tinted glass * Digital clock B-SERIES TRUCKS © Power steering © Alloy wheels Rear ABS © AM/FM stereo radio © Driver-side air bag 626 CRONOS © 2.0L 16-valve DOHC engine © Available V6 © Dual air bags (SRS) * Side-impact door beams ° AM/FM stereo cassette an dancing rum eeain month for 24 monns and C.0 8's $200 fa total of $10,200 — at 3.9% per annum equals $298 per mont for 36 months and C 0 16 $620 fra tot! of $10 62 bpd a 7, 1995 for a lined time only.
