May is Fitness Month Using what you have, to get what you want Claiming wellness, an exciting concept that can be accomplished Sun Staff It's your life, but are calling shots? May has been designated Fit- ness Month for more than a Participaction Day and our annual Walk-a- Block. This year we will expand on that idea for it seems that some of Us are just not getting the point. We walk the block in May, but then cannot incorporate a “real exercise class” into our sched- ules, so we do nothing for the rest of the year — despite having parks and trail, gyms, areanas rinks and pools at our disposal. We read about the risks of a high faty low fiber diet and see healthy cookbooks and courses offered locally but keep on eating our deep fried foods, pastries, fiber- less processed foods and drinks — not to mention coffee, pop and alcohol. Our ‘town is brimming with skilled an talented people who ness and fatigue and depression as if they were perfectly normal. We've missed the point. Whose job is our health any- ways? For your see: ~ the fitness instructor can't make you fit, but you can - the counsellor can't make you happy, but you can ~ the doctor can't prevent degenerative disease, but you can - the dietician can’t make you slim and trim, but you can. So what's the point? Just this: You have to do it. Every individual is responsi- ble for their own health and hap- piness. The choices are yours. It's an exciting concept, you can choose wellness, but you must claim it for yourself. There is lots of help available, but the only ono who can actually make changes in your life is you. There will be three more arti- cles in this series concerning active living. They will deal with being active in your food choices; in your communities and being active physically. But these must begin with being active in making choices for your life. Make a difference, make a change: BE ACTIVE — IT"S YOUR LIFE.
