ROSSLAND EVENING RECORD BY EBER C. SMITH, Published every day (except Sunday) and Weekly DAILY: tions. oo Jing quotations on the exchange today Bingle copy.. One Year, in advance... Six months, in advance ROSSLAND NEWSPAPERS. A Rossland correspondent writes: “The Mining Review gave up the ghost | last week. It was not very old, scarcely nine months, but it was just as expen- sive to keep as a much older and justier infant, and its progenitors decided shut down on its Oliver Twist procliv- ities and bury it in the over-crowded journalist bone-yard of B. This is the second death of the kind in this city, the first being that of the Social Critic, which eminated from the Recorp office. Like the measles—and measles are prev. alent in HT just are contagious. died on Monday Coyney, the editor and publisher, made a gallant struggle, b but lacking a bonus from the stoc! change the ex- nee of running such a sheet greatly exceeded the income, and as a natural sequence the publisher is a poorer and é wiser man than he was two months All this is bad for the printers an i think it is the duty of every newspsper in Kootenay to warn members of the stick and rule fraternity to keep away from Rossland.” As a matter of fact in this p is altogether overdone, as many who have invested in one of the many new sheets started recently have learned to their cost. —Kamloops Sentinal. None of the publications referred to above were entitled to the name of “newspaper, unless possibly the first, which did not have a plant of its own. Members of the ‘‘stick and rule’”’ have no cause to complain of working in Rossland for they have all been paid, and receive as good if not better wages than any place in the whole Dominion. The field here is probably filled, but newepaper men who have cast their lot with Rossland have done reasonably well. If the Sentinel will give a history of Newspapers in Kamloops the career will be far more checkered than that of Rossland. Rossiand newspapers are all right. ——_— The Corbin rag cannot make any pre- tense to being fair, reliab’e or honest, so long as it allows its misstatement con- cerning the capacity of the Columbia & Western to go uncorrected. It said that under the most favorable circumstances that road could not handle more than 250 tons a day, whereupon Superintend- ent Gutelius showed that they had hauled 500 tons daily fora month and was capable of hauling from Rossland to Trail over 1,000 tons pet day. Even if Corbin does control the rag, it might be just a little bit fair and honest in dis- cussing an opposition line of railroad. The bicyclist who was foolish enough to dispute the right of way with a loaded wagon not only came to grief in the streets of Philadelphia, but in the courts of Pennsylvania, which is a credit to the driver of the loaded wagon and the aforesaid courts. The bicycliet took the grounds that his cycle was a vehicle, but the courts held differently, and that a Person should give the road to a ‘loaded wagon, whether he walked ‘‘a-foot,” or rode ‘‘a-foot.”” It now appears that Theodore Dur- rant, the murderer of Blanche Lamont, in San Francisco, will die in jail of old age, and not fall off ascaffold and get his neck caught in a rope, and thereby kill himself, as has ‘been d. A list of damage suits that is appalling has just been filed against the Point Ellis bridge at Victoria, by the relatives of the unfortunates. Although. there are several suits that will be filed later, the total aggregation of those already filed is $2,284,500. In addition to these the city and the tramway company have suits against each other, each holding the other re- sponsible for the collapse of the ill-fated bridge on May. Preparations Being Made for a Proper Jubilation. It is the intention of Alderman Wal- lace and some. of the other councilmen that Rossland celebrate‘on the: 24th in honor of the Queen’s Jubilee. The mat- ter has been left in the hands of the mayor, who will see that all arrange- ments are attended to properly. Alderman Wallace said that he be- lieved it would be an excellent plan for a committee of citizens to be appointed for the sports, games and general ex- penses. He thought the coun .1 ought to,and would, appropriate money to Jot help defray the expenses. The onl: question was to yet the matter sti up and awaken interest so that some would take hold and push the thing slong...
