You may soon notice a new
focus on health in your child's
school.

Community health nurses
have long kept immunizations
up to date or screened for vi-
sual or hearing problems in
the schools.

Now, nurses are calling for
a more expansive health pro-
gram that includes health in-
struction and a wide range of
school-based health services.

The in-school health ser-
vices might range from first-
aid to visits from nutritionist,
psychologists, speech thera-
pists or a host of other health
care professionals.

Nurses also want to see a
greater focus on a healthy
physical and psychological en-
vironment within the school,
family and community.

For the school this incudes
clean, safe facilities as well as
freedom from harassment or
discrimination and recogni-
tion of cultural differences.

This kind of health promo-
tion — proactive and preven-
tative — helps develop atti-
tudes that give children the
tools and information to exer-
cise control over their own
health as they mature .and,
later, contribute to a healthy

curriculum guide of the B.C.
Ministry of Education called
“Learning for Living” which
covers the principles of health-
ful living with a new emphasis
on the personal development
of students.

Student study nutrition, fit-
ness, how to care for them-
selves, how to care for others
and how to care for the envi-

Instruction on. sexuality
and sex education are also im-
portant components under
family life education in the
new school curriculum.

The old adage “prevention

is better than cure” never
rings more true than when
teenagers face decisions about
the use of drugs, nicotine or al-
cohol,

But they can face these de-

cisions more responsibly if
they have developed the habit
earlier in their lives of making
healthy life decisions based on
sound information.
_ This habit can be developed
in younger children by such
tactics as encouraging the
simple, daily task of tooth-
brushing based on informa-
tion about the consequences of
dental neglect.
