The researchers used a technique called gene mapping to localize the gene to » narrow region of “The pinpointing of the gene for could lead to a medical treatment or possibly a cure for this disease,” he said. The importance of the findings could extend well beyond neurofibromatosis patients and their families, said one of the hi Dr. Bernd i of Massachusetts General Hospital. 17, one of the 23 pairs of chromosomes that a human hereditary information. Gene mapping involves collecting genetic material from families with a disorder and marking the genes with chemical signposts called DNA probes. These signposts allow researchers to identify tiny genetic regions that are inherited in the same pattern as which p disfig ment in Joseph Merrick, the 19th-century Londoner known as the Elephant Man, occurs in one in 3,000 live births. It runs in families, but it also occurs spontaneously at “ a high rate in families without a history of the disease. The disease, which usually appears at birth or in infancy, can be very mild or quite severe. It is characterized by benign lumps on the skin and nerve-cell tumors called neurofibromas, which can occur anywhere on the skin or inside the body. ‘These turmos can cause disfigurement, deformity of the spine, and deaf upon where they occur. WHY - : TOO ALLERGIC TO WORK Woman to get welfare LONDON, ONT. (CP) — womar/has won the right to Gblect scist assistance ben- efits because she's too aller- gic to the environment to work for a living. Lawyer Gord Cudmore said an Ontario social assis tance review board has ruled his client, Linda Mae Whitlock, is unemployable because she suffers from what's commonly known as 20th century disease. Her disorder, a type of en He said he knows of no other cases in Canada where a person with the disease has been given such benefits. Whitlock, a 45-year-old mother of two and a former elementary school teacher, had mixed reactions to the review board's decision. “It’s a victory because it means they are recognizing the illness, but it makes me very sad because I'd like to go back to teaching.” Whitlock once saw her ir 1 hyper: ty, makes the London woman allergic to almost everything around her, including the air in most workplaces, Cudmore said. as unique but said her doctor has assured her thousands of other Canadians have it in varying degrees — some far more severe than her condition. Scanner sheds light on crime TORONTO (CP) — A new scanning device that allows medical researchers to view the structure and function of the brain is shedding light on violent criminal behavior and cqeaine and alcohol abuse, a Texas psychiatrist said. A study using positron emission tomography to scan the .brains of six repeat offenders who committed vio- lent and irrational crimes showed they had brain de- fects treatable with medica- tion, Nora Volkow told a news conference at the re- cent annual meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine. Eight to 15 per cent of violent prisoners commit completely irrational crimes, but account for half of the violent crimes because they are usually repeat offenders, said Volkow, of the Univer. sity of Texas Health Science Centre in Houston. Two of the six offenders had brain defects similar to those found in epileptics and were treated with anti-con: vulsive medication, usually prescribed to prevent epilep: tic seizures, she said They have been free of violent behavior for the 18 months they have taken medication, Volkow said. ‘The scanning device allows researchers to study neur ological disorders in people. Previously, such research could only be done on animals and cadavers. The other four violent offenders had other brain disorders and were treated with different drugs, inclu ding tranquilizers, although two have not responded to treatment, Volkow said. She said brain scans show ed abnormal function in sev. eral different parts of the criminals’ brains. “That tells you that violent behavior can be facilitated by . many brain areas.” Volkow also said the scan ning device was used in a study that shows chronic cocaine use causes brain damage. A study examining blood flow in the brains of 24 people who used at least four grams of cocaine a week for six months or more found small hemorrhages and restricted blood vessels, she said. “Cocaine was believed to be sort of innocuous because it does not produce with drawal like heroin,” she said, adding it is now proving toxic to a number of organs, including the brain. Although she has suffered from the disorder for years, her condition has become more severe in the last three years, she said. She's allergic to many foods, dust, pollen, chlorine, smoke, perfume, exhaust fumes, most chemi- cals and food perservatives. She said she felt tired and dizzy all the time, her ears were ringing and she became irritable and tearful. “T couldn't think. I couldn't focus. I felt like I was float- ing.” In January 1986, Whitlock and her husband separated. Unable to continue her teaching career, she tried supporting herself and her sons on what her husband gave her, as well as what she could earn by giving private piano lessons in her home. She couldn't afford the air- and water-cleaning equip- ment or the special diet she and her children require, she said. Her children also suffer allergies, although not to the same degree as she does. The Ontario Social Ser vices Ministry refused in the fall of 1986 to recognize that her disease made it impos. sible for her to work. FIGHTS BATTLE Whitlock also had to fight an uphill battle with the medical review board, Cud. more said. It was suggested her problem was in her head. After one doctor diagnosed her problem as “old age,” Whitlock found another doctor who specialized in en- INVITING APPLICATIONS FOR FOREST LICENCE Forest Act (Section 11) TAKE NOTICE thot interested Person(s) are invited to submit more applications to the Ghiet F Forester for Forest Licence(s) which will outhorize the harvesting of 30,000 m? or portic of timber Snnwally for 20 years from lands within the ee Timber Sur Area wi irvestiny parte restricted to specitied areas. Counsellors deliver programs EDMONTON (CP) — Add- iction counsellors in British Columbia say they've got a winning formula by involving the entire native community in the treatment process. Program director Vincent Joseph of Prince George said counsellors developed a mo- bile team last year to help natives who reverted to drug and alcohol use after leaving a treatment centre. “We deliver programs that meet the needs of the people rather than having the peo- ple come to a residential treatment program where there's a standard treat. ment,” Joseph said. At the request of chief and council, a team moves through the community for 30 days.
