“It’s sometimes politically unwise
to be as vulnerable as I’m allowing
myself to be, but I think it’s,
something that's missing in politics,”
Gran said. ‘‘People hide themselves

and criticism.’’

Gran, 48, was born in Winfield,
Alta.

“I grew up during the oil and lum
ber boom and it was very much a
man’s world. The men were physical
men. They worked hard and drank
hard. It was.acceptable for men to go
to the beer parlor on weekends, get

writer for a radio station. She made

her, doing the same job.

“I survived by being very, very
tough on the outside. | was extremely
aggressive and belligerent and, never
allowed anybody to push me around.

“I was pushed around at home,
watched my mother being pushed

“IT was the eldest child and felt
guilty because I could not protect my
younger brothers and sisters from
violence and could not~protect my
mother."*

Gran’s mother, Hilda Masson, now
