He has the indirect support of the Victoria and Vancouver Con- setvatives, through their refusal to join hands with the party in the in- terior, and of the ‘Cotten party through its vain effort to continue in the field. Though the Miner resents Con- servative attacks on Martin, saying that the convention ‘‘will be likely to be able to deal. with him without any intervention or advice from in- terested Conservative sources,” it acts directly contrary to these sen- timents by printing in the very same column an article recommending certain gentlemen for nomination by the Conservatives of the Ross- land riding. The Conservatives will no doubt feel duly grateful to the Miner for the praise it accords to some of their leaders, but, like the Liberals, they can make a judi- cious choice ‘‘without any interven- tion or advice from interested” Grit ‘‘sources.” They fully ap- preciate the merits of Messrs. Mack- intosh and Dick and, should their choice fall upon either of these gen- tlemen, will look for as hearty com- rae) MARTIN’S GUNS SPIKED. Martin has been making a great hullabaloo about the grant of the Crows Nest coal lands, claiming that they were exempted from. the royalty of 5 cents per ton required of thém in the Miner, after, as before, the nomination. EDITORIAL NOTES, Would Martin show so much en- ergy in attacking the title of. the on all coal produced trom crown granted land. This was the burden of his Victoria speech and is one of the main issues he makes in posing as the friend of the people against corporations. The Colonist spikes his guns‘by making the following quotation from the letters patent given the British Columbia South- ern Railway Co.: “‘Provided also that there shall be, and there is hereby reserved to us, our heirs and successors, the royalty upon and in respect of each and every ton of coal raised or gotten from the lands hereby granted, now in force, or from time to time im- posed by the legislature.” This clause not only reserves the royalty provided by the existing law but makes the grant subject to any further royalty which may be enact- ed by the legislature in the future. Martin had better go hunt some new campaign thunder. HE WILL SUBMIT HIMSELF! In its sublime love of fairness to Joe Martin, the Miner protests against what it calls ‘utterly un- truthful accounts of his efforts to fill up his ministry.” It then, in the innocence of its heart, proceeds to say that Martin ‘thas signified his willingness to submit himself to thé Liberal convention which is to be held tomorrow in Vancouver.” ’ “Submit himself,” indeed! This is exquisite after the brazen effron- tey with which the Martin forces told the Liberal meeting in Vancou- ver that they were going to run the convention and that any one who did not like it could get out. They found that the method of voting by wards would let in some anti-Mar- tin men and they promptly aban- doned it for the method of voting at large. At the first meeting in Ross- land, it was found that W. F. Mc- Neill was the only member willing to bear his own expenses to Van- couver, and he was then authorized to cast all of Rossland’s five votes. McNeill being anti-Martin and being instructed against him, Smith Cur- New V: Coal ly to the coal land if Dunsmuir were not interested on the other side of the case? And would the Colonist be so energetic in opposing party lines if there were no understanding be- tween Dunsmuir and Martin? Martin’s men are. going to run the Liberal convention and run out all who oppose Martin. In the end he may find that:‘the majority of the Liberals are outside of the party. Writing of the expressed deter- mination of the Vancouver Liberal executive to run the provincial con- vention, the Inland Sentinel says: “This little clique must have a very poor opinion of the material of which the Liberals of the interior are composed. Bulldozing may go down in Vancouver, but it won't work up country.” - Joe Martin encountered a frost at New Westminster, but nothing could dampen his intense enthusi- asm for Martin.
