wilh Harry Pep1Jer lrl Pool tournaments are getting to be a regular occurrence at Branch 14 of the Legion in Rossland these days as we are becoming a centre for this kind of activity with two tables which keep the action ahnost continuous and a couple of enterprising addicts of the game organizing and running things. This activity is quite likely tin increase. Starting back in February, Dennis Hirons and Bert Pengelly have run monthly tournaments in each of the succeeding months and I understand that this is expected to continue and the participation level increase as time goes on. In February it was a doubles tourney, which was won by Rob Harrasin and Frank Harris who came out on top in a truggle with Pengelly and Jamie Richardson, yes, she's a girl and able to hold her own with just about anyone in this game. In March it was men's singles and this was won by Clyde Gordon over Harrasin. April saw another doubles tourney whichs tarted at 11 a.m. with around ten teams but they kept the tables busy until well after five p.m. and the winners were Lee Flanders and Harrasin with Keith Woods and Darrell Morrow second and Pengelly and Hirons in the third spol Now to the outdoors. Good news, golfers, you who have nothing else to do during the day, the Rossland Retirees will open up the regular weekly sessions for retired genUemen who like to play this game. In fact, before you read this we shall have things underway for 1986. Tuesday morning, 9 a.m. is the tee time. I hope we have some good weather and a good crowd. Later in this column I'll tell you how we made out. Well, that didn't take long to give an answer to how we made out on Tuesday, suffice to say it was a rather damp morning. Jimmy Scott came and picked me up and we went down to the course. We were not the first ones there. Lou Freeman and Noland Garrison were in the clubroom drinking coffee and they finally teamed up with Jim and another fellow to get things started. Then another foursome followed but as there were not many more around that wanted to brave the weather we stalled and decided to wait for another week and possibly better conditions. What a pleasant surprise to see Noland up and at it again. This gent, in his eighties, comes up from the States to play with us so often and also likes to shop over here. He said Tuesday morning he's not sure which country he's an alien in. Spring is just around the comer and we'll keep trying weekly until we get it right. And a word to that sports announcer on CJAT (KBS), that handicap you were so insistant on knowing, bow about a 20 for nine holes, 50 to 56 is my usual score and as you can see I'm still trying to get below 100 for 18, it's always fun, though. Now, back to indoors again. On Saturday night the Legion held a cribbage tournament with 11 tables downstairs. It was the first of what could be an ongoing event, all tables were full and there was coffee and a lunch for $1 plus the cards. So it was quite an evening for a very small ouUay and the winners were, for the ladies, Corinne Halladay and Ina Austin, while the men's winners were Mr. C. Johnson from Trail and Mike Hoyw of Rossland. The word is out that another one will be held on May 10, same time, same place. And now I'll wrap this up, so 'Til next time, then!
