Minor Soccer Season Highlights VAL The following year end report of the Castlegar and District Minor Soccer Associa- tion was compiled by president Heather M. Hallett, . * * Castlegar and District Mi- nor Soccer Association has had a very busy year. Our player enrolment increased by 48 per cent which necessitated the creation of new divisions for the players. We ended up with five teams of six-to-nine-year-olds in Division 6, three teams of nine-to-11-year-olds in Division “4, three teams of 11-to-13-year- olds in Division 3 and four teams of 13-16-year-olds in Division 2, with a total of 225 boys and girls playing soccer. They were coached by 15 coaches and approximately 30 assistant coaches. We had four couples working as division managers and 11 referees turn- ing out for the games. Each team played twice a week . during the spring and fall seasons, The executive and diree- tors of the association join with me in thanking all these people who devoted so much of their time and energy toward mak- ing soccer such an enjoyable sport for the children this year. Due to the greatly in- creased number of players and teams, .it was difficult to find enough fields at which to schedule our games, so we have been active in promoting the building of a new soccer pitch at the community complex. We hope to be able to assist with fund-raising, work parties and anything else that is needed to get this’ field in operation. We also had a_ great shortage of uniforms and equip- ment due to the increased . numbers of children wanting to play. We had increased our registration fee to $5 for 1978, but ran short of funds and had to apply to the Castlegar Ath- letic Association for a grant. They very kindly gave us $300 for uniforms. The Dairy Queen donated a set of uniforms and Tudor Sports also gave us a set of uniform tops, while Castlegar Drug, Castle Realty and Cooper Agencies each donated a new trophy. Our thanks go to all these agencies for their much appreciated help. The end-of-the-season tour- nament was held on Sept. 30 this year and each child. was givena y ticket to The Arsenals took the . playoff cup in Division 4 while the Rangers won the annual trophy. The playoff cup was not awarded this year in Division 5 because of sporadic attendance by the players this fall, but the Panthers won the annual tro- phy. Many children were also able to take advantage of the Soccer School which was put on here in July by the B.C. Soccer Association. The children were taught a number of skills and their progress was tested at the end of the session, Many earned skill development awards. All-star teams formed from ampng the players in Divisions 2 and 3 competed in the West Kootenay Real Estate- Board the Castle Theatre when he or she turned in his uniform at the end of the day. If anyone still has a uniform that hasn't been turned in, will you please con- tact your division manager or Heather Hallett so that it can be picked up. The association will have to increase fees very drastically next year if all uniforms and equipment aren't returned to us soon, The playoffs this year were very exciting, especially in Division 2 where the last game between Ajax and Juventug went into overtime before the Juventus finally prevailed and won the house league playoff cup. Ajax had already won the annual trophy for the most games won during the season. The Arsenals took the playoff cup in Division 4 while- the Rangers won the annual trophy. Cancer No Barrier For Couple in Love Determined that love can fight cancer, a Kansas woman recently tied the knot with a cancer victim at a marriage _ ceremony in a Wichita hospital, “We don't care what the * future has for us, we want it to said 27-year-old . be together,” Carolyn Nottingham, whose husband, Johnny, 26, is being treated at the St. Francis Hos- pital. “I think Johnny will. make it if he just stays‘in there. I don’t know how long, nobody knows that,” she added. “We'll just take it one day at a time.” The wedding ceremony was performed in Johnny's hospital room by Rev. Tim Hutton, (a friend of Johnny's) after he managed to convince two strangers to act as wit- nesses. The room was alive with love, as- Johnny (wearing a T-shirt that said, “I Love Carolyn") and Carolyn (holding a large red rose) said their vows. “We had thought about getting married and we kept setting a date and then putting it off,” said Carolyn, When Johnny was first admitted to St. Francis Hos- pital for brain surgery, the wedding date was again post- poned. But when further com- plications forced him to be re- admitted to the hospital, they agreed to tie the knot, without delay. In Division 3, Nelson won the trophy, with Castlegar coming in second. busier and more eventful year in 1979. When hiking through rough country, be careful about taking a short cut across un- known territory back: to your camp. Tf you have a topographic map and it shows that you can make the short cut, okay. Otherwise, it's a good idea to retrace your steps the way you came, even if it means taking what appears to be the long way around, More than one hunter has started out along what appear- ed to be a short cut only to come to some natural obstacle that was impossible to go ‘around. This could be a long rock ledge which dropped off several hundred feet to a valley below, or it could be a rock ledge rising straight up. Other obstacles include a large swamp caused by a beaver dam, or a box canyon with no way out except’ how you came in. ~ Often when you come up against some natural obstacle With the present labor dispute within the school dis- trict, our program of activities has been greatly reduced. As a result, our recreation informa: tion is on a much smaller scale, Cossacks Basketball A program we do wish to remind you of is the Castlegar Cossacks Men's Basketball Pro- gram which consists of a men's recreational house league, as well ds a Senior B men's team. Persons interested in partici- pating or would like further information should contact Jer- emy Palmer at 365-2620. Clown Trio The local arts council has an interesting presentation coming up on Nov. 23, The Community Complex is the site at7 p.m. for the Bim Bim Boom Clown Trio. This interesting evening of entertainment is designed for children of all ages, As the cast consists of three members who, until re- cently, were with the Moscow Circus, the performances should be ofa first-class nature. such as this, it means your steps back to where you . started the shortcut and only then starting back to camp along the ofiginal route which * you sought to avoid because it was so long. The final problem in this situation is that you're usually returning to camp on the shank end of the day and all that extra walking could see you making a lot of it after dark. Sounds like lots of fun, Weavera’ Guild Exhibit Keep in mind the Weavers’ Guild Exhibition and sale which is to take place this Saturday at the Community Complex from ll a.m. - 3 p.m. Kiwanis Skate-A-Thon This coming Saturday pro- mises to be an interesting one with the Kiwanis Club present- ing its second annual Skate-A- ‘Thon, The event will be getting underway at 9 a.m, and con- tinue throughout the day until m, As the event is a means of raising money for’ the many worthwhile Kiwanis projects, your interest and support is required, Due to the Skate-A-Thon, public skating is cancelled for this week. However, keep in mind that we do have public skating on a daily basis at the Complex. Rebel Hockey The Skate-A-Thon is not the only major event for the Complex on Saturday. The Rebel Hockey Club is in action, as well. Saturday evening be- ginning at 8 p.m., they will be playing host to the Rossland Warriors.
