will 20 1982 {:t / t 8 - Trail Times - Friday, August • Wherever one goes in this area these days you hear comments on the fortunes of our Little League kids and sometimes the comments are not always kind. It seems to me because we have had so much success recently every Little League team from Trail must win. However, as anyone who has ever taken part in organized .• sport knows, you win some '• and you lose some. The job done with these kids over the past few years is unbelievable. The way they have responded to the • train ing regimens of ·• manager Andy Bilesky is ►• forever a credit to the kids and the coaching staff. This time around the going has been tough and the ball hasn't always 'bounced Trail's way but regardless of what they do from here on in we should be proud of this , bunch of kids. They are our ambassadors of sport. In Creston this weekend the championships of the ·• Kootenay Soccer League will be contested. •• Kimberley will face '• Nelson in one semi-final while the Rossland Labatts go up against Cranbrook in , the other. :The Labatts, coming off a big win over Castlegar to :; advance, have had a comparatively good season this year and have given the Rovers some excellent competition, in two games that I can recall they tied Cranbrook 0-0 in Rossland • and lost one on penalty kicks in Cranbrook. Nelson, whom Rossland •. had a winning percentage weather now and golf is a real good way to take advantage of it. The Lions Club of Rossland held a steak barbecue at their newlyerected shelter at the Lions Park at Black Bear recently. It was well attended and before it got started an impromptu meeting was called and a summary of work to be done with the money now on hand was laid out by park committee chairman Maurice MacArthur and bis members, Alfie Albo and Bill Profili. Paving of the roads around the park was named as one of the top projects while lary general maintenance of the area will be also looked after. Removal of some of the tables in the tent sites, which are now heavily overgrown in some cases, will be done. The tables will be taken and placed on the lawn in the area between the roads in and out for more convenience for campers using the area. The evening was taken up with the members of the club an~ their wives and-or girlfriends dining on steaks, steamed spuds and salad prepared by head chef Gord Phillips. After digesting the food a bonfire was started in the midfield area and we sat and enjoyed the flames and an occasional beer until quite late. Everyone agreed that we should bold more of the same. Up at the Legion, meanwhile, plans are being studied and offered for tender for the proposed extension to the clubrooms. Thirty feet is to be added at the rear of the premises and tenders will be called at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25. · A party honoring Carl Osing's 32 years as a member of the Legion executive will be held Sept. 4 with baron of beef supper and dancing till? Carl's rather remarkable record started back in 1950 and be has served many offices en route to bis 32 years. On the national scene, the Expos are hanging in there but are still several games out of first place. The trouble seems to be that the teams they have to get ahead of to win are playing as well or a little better than they are. The Lions after a smashing start to their season have de'Veloped all kinds of problems and now have sunk into a tie with the Eskimos for fourth place.. They started out sacking opposing quarterbacks like you wouldn't believe. Now the shoe is on the other foot and Dewalt and Paopao are taking the brunt of it. Did someone say, "What else is new?" the other. The Labatts, coming off a big win over castlegar to advance, have had a comparatively good season this year and have given the Rovers some excellent competition, in two games • that I can recall they tied •· Cranbrook 0-0 in Rossland ~· and lost one on penalty kicks in Cranbrook. Nelson, whom Rossland •. had a winning percentage • against this season, go • against the Athletics from Kimberley who are always tough at · playoff time. I really don't think the playoff site means that much since • Creston is only an hour or so drive from Nelson and Rossland and about the same from Cranbrook and Kimberley. Creston, .•• qevertheless, is considered part of the East Kootenay in its SP(lrts affiliation. • •, :; •, •, • •' Heavy dew greeted 32 golfer.3 on Tuesday at the upper course as the retirees got together for their weekly outing. However, it turned out to be a beautiful day and • we had a shot at Bingo, • Bango, Bongo, low net and ,one ball went to the most honest golfer. Tim Jenkin and Russ Broughton presided over the day's activities and Matt Mattson came out on top of the BBB with 11 points. Archie McCannell followed with 10. In low net it was Mac McDonald with a 23 (Mac's handicap should come down next week). Lew Freeman came in with a 32 tied with Harold Dixon. Bob Walley followed with a 33 and Harry Simpkinson was the most honest. People to run next week's show have not been named as yet but I imagine someone will come forward to get the show on the road. Looks like we are in for a spell of good • : : ! 1
