CasNews photo by Coroline Soukorotf Bake sale helps club The Kootenay Art Club, com- prised of 35 members and three honorary members, held its ninth an- nual Showing and Sale of Artwork which included a tea and bake sale April 13 at the Senior Citizens Cen- tre in Castlegar. Artists submitting works in all media included Jason’ Peil, Pearl Anderson, Marlene Jones, Tanis Kramer, Phyllis Lamb, Marjorie Lamarche, Rita Morrison, Cheryl Nevokshonoff, Kay O'Flaherty, Elizabeth Popoff, Ruby Partridge, Heidi Berger, Joan Roth, Caroline Soukoroff, Catherine Stadler, Shirley Torbic, Fred Voykin, Donna Warcimaga and Marjorie West. Jones donated a watercolor pain- ting as a door prize, the winner of which. was Monique Pellerine of Castlegar. The Art Club Offer of day care hooks writer The Kootenay School.of Writing figured that a Governor General's nominee who was also a single mother would need the offer of daycare if it wanted her to teach in Nelson. So that’s what the KSW did — of- fered Diane Schoemperlen child care at a local centre — and she im- mediately accepted the position of writer-in-residence for a week, saying it was the first time a writing school had considered her needs and those of her son, Alexander. Schoemperlen comes to Nelson for the week of May 3-8, where she will do an evening reading May 3 at the Student Union Building at 711-10th St., individual manuscript critiques the next day at the Nelson Public Library, and will teach an intensive three-morning session on fiction writing from May 6-8. She will also be aval ied fe Pap eco critiques. Schoemperlen requires manuscrip- ts as soon as possible for workshop- ping in the classes, KSW said in a peta release. Registration for the have submitted paintings for display at the Castleview Care Centre, whose official opening is Thursday. New work will be displayed each month. Sculptor's unique work inhabits dreamlike world By LOU LYNN Director National Exhibition Centre Vancouver sculptor, Richard Prin- ce’s work inhabits a dreamlike world between everyday reality and pure imagination. Prince i ob- professor. His profile as an artist has gained him the enviable honor of an entry in the Canadian Encyclopedia. Since childhood, Prince has been a “maker,’’ and his early interest in three-dimensional handy work carried over into his artistic ex- jects into unique visual, spacial ex- periences by giving these objects new, non-functional functions in relation to one another. A retrospec- tive cross section of Prince’s free- standing sculpture and scale models will be on display to tickle the public’s minds from April 18 to May 19. at the West Kootenay National Exhibition Centre. Prince, a native of Comox, has lived most of his life in Vancouver. He studied art history at the Univer- sity of B.C. and, after graduating, began to show his sculptural work at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1972. Prince joined the fine-arts faculty at UBC in 1975 and is now an assistant He has always worked from scale models that give him a vivid sense of how his objects will ac- tually occupy space, something drawings really can’t provide. The NEC's exhibition will give the public a chance to see both actual — often large — sculptures and scale models from which sculptures have been developed. Among Prince’s stylistic influences are the “home handyman’’ esthetics of the 1950s (though Prince was born in 1949 and was but a young boy through the °50s). He also counts certain books published for boys on scientific and mechanical home ex-. periments as influences on his per- sonal development. For a while Prin- ce considered a career in architec- ture, but he settled on sculpture because of the freedom it offered to explore significant special ideas. Art critic Stephen Godfrey wrote of Prince in the journal Canadian Art: “*His images are sd sleek and sen- suous, it’s not clear whether they are primitive or high-tech. Sculpting visionary machines and symbolic landscapes with elegance and wit, Prince has been performing a gentle alchemy all his own.’’ Featured in the NEC's smaller gallery at the same time as Prince's exhibit will be Lock It Up, a Royal British Columbia Museum exhibit of locking devices from B.C. history. The NEC is located across from the Castlegar Airport on Highway 3A. Hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and noon to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. e which is SCHOOL DISTRICT No. 7 (NELSON) NOTICE QUESTIONNAIRE ON CONDOM MACHINES IN SCHOOLS School District No. 7 (Nelson) invites District participation in a survey q Questionnaire: Friday, May 3, 1991 tendance area. 1. at each school in the District ottendance area; 2. at the School Board Office, 308 Anderson Street, Nelson.
