Harcourt calls
speech ‘requiem’

Vander Zalm and NDP Leader Mike
Harcourt disagreed about the health
of the Social Credit government after
the throne speech Thursday.

While Vander Zalm joked with
reporters that he was about ready to
call an election, the Opposition leader
said the speech opening the B.C
legislature was a “requiem for a
government.”’

“It’s a throne speech of a gover-
nment that has run out of gas, that
has run out of energy,’’ said Har-
court, sporting a red rose in the lapel
of his dark blue suit.

reporters who asked if the throne
speech and the lively debate that
followed signalled a possible election

“I was in the mood,”’ said Vander
Zaim, who also wore a blue suit, but
adorned it with a white carnation. ‘‘It
was great. We were winning in the
house and I felt so good I wanted to

The throne speech hinted at wage
controls, ‘‘a cynical election move,”
said John Shields, head of the 30,000
member B.C. Government Employees

Vander Zalm refused to guarantee
there won’t be wage controls, but said

whatever legislation followed would
be fair.

“It’s an assist-in the Process and
it'll be fair and sensitive,” he said

adamantly opposes the government's
plan to institute referendums for a
host of issues, particularly money
