Gus. Badali, Schneider's Toronto-based agent, told Le Jour- nal de Montreal this week he is studying the notion of playing in Europe next season. “There are teams in Italy with lots of money who you can be sure would want a defenceman of Schneider's ability,” Badali said. "After two years, Schneider could still come back to the NHL.” Schneider said he felt Montreal general manager Serge Savard “hasn't offered what I'm worth and it's disappointing.” Brawl costly to Canadians HAVANNA - Canadi fficials accused players of using “bats, fists and feet” in a wild mellee during a Pan-Amer- ican Games baseball game Thursday. Tyson also expects to fight — no matter what. ’ " He's basically said, (Look, I have a committment,’ " manager Shelly Finkel said of Holyfield's feeling about fighting the former world champion, who could be indicted for rape by a special grand jury to be convened next week in Indianapolis. “A contract is a contract,” Finkel said of the agreement for a mandatory defence by Holy- field against Tyson on Nov. 8 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. “I received a letter from Vin- cent J. Fuller, who is MIke Tyson's attorney, and it also was signed by Mike Tyson,” said Dan Duva, who will promote the fight. “ The letter said Mike Tyson has decided whether or not an indictment is issued against him, he will go forward with the Nov. 8 bout against Evander Holyfield.” A news conference for the bout is scheduled for Sept. 4. An 18-year-old contestant at the Miss Black American pageant at Indianapolis last month has accused Tyson of rape. Tyson also was sued for $100 million Wednesday by Rosie Jones,.a former Miss Black America who charged the fighter d and battery by touching her b 1 and emotional issue. V3V 4G2 MAKE YOUR WILDERNESS DREAM COME ALIVE! Distinctive retreat, elegant estate, or ESTAR MEAL VOL nbia + Ph. 365-8155 PULPIT & PEW In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus says: “Be not anxious about your life, what you shail ..@at_or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on? Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?” How can we not be anxious about our livelihood, our jobs, our future? Isn’t this teaching by Jesus a bit nai a bit too much? We must admit, however, that ours is an anxious genera- tion, For example I have never experienced such anxiety as I saw in young people in my role as university chaplain in recent years. What is Jesus trying to say to us in this text? First, it is not prohibitian about human concern, nor is it a di ion of wise pl. ig. Second, it is important to note that this passage is poetic language, not scientific lan- guage. Birds and flowers-and people do sometimes die of star- vation and cold. That does not mean that the sayings are not true, but rather that they are meant to describe an attitude, an orientation towards life. The key word is “anxious.” Are there not many things that we should be anxious about? What is wrong with that? Jesus says not to fret about things you cannot change. What is wrong with anxiety, worry, is that it depletes our energy, leads to self-consciousness and self-centredness and paralysis. There is no positive content in anxiety, because anxiety comes from fear. It comes from fear of loss — loss of our standard of living, of our health, of our rela- tionships. It comes from a fear that dis- tracts us from the real meaning of life, that puts the emphasis in the wrong place. It concentrates on livelihood rather than living. Life is not food or work or cloth- ing or education. All these things are the means to life. Anxiety concentrates on the means, rather than the end. When the means to life are th d, we do get i Our whole society encourages that. Today when so many are out of work, should they not be anxious? The devastating aspect of living unemployed is not so much material as i Fear leads to anxiety, self- seeking and paralysis. Love leads to concern and action. Love sets us free from our divid- ed loyalties, from our self. because we live in a society that says that if you cannot be eco- nomically productive you are not worth much, That is not_what Jesus says, What Jesus says is, “Aren’t you worth much more than these (the birds and flowers)?” Another thing that anxiety does is to drain away the strength from today and waste it on tomorrow in fears that may never be fulfilled. Why worry today, for -example, about whether you will be OK tomor- row? Better to concentrate on what is on hand now, and in so doing be ready for tomorrow. What about the things over which we do have some control, some responsibility? What then? How shall we avoid anxiety over these things? Jesus tells us to seek first the Kingdom of God. Now what help is that, what does it mean for us in our age of anxiety? The Kingdom of God is the kingdom of right relationships. Tt involves love and trust in God and love for another. It is an existence of harmony of humani- ty with God, with each other and with the whole created order. It is our true life towards which we strive. Being inthe kingdom is being totally reori- ented to life. It is the kingdom of love and trust, and love and trust are the opposite of fear and anxiety. tred concentration on trying to preserve our life. ' Love and trust give us a free heart, courage and strength to allow us to accept each new day as it comes. If we are reoriented by the Gospel, by the good news that Géd loves us and accepts us, we are then set free from our @inxi- eties. Even so, we will find our- selves anxious from time to time because perfection is not yet attainable. But we constantly continue to: seek for the fullness of the king- dom, to pray for its coming when, as Jesus promises, true security will be ours.
