Stories and photos by Glen Freeman Todd Smee is a young man with a dream. “One day I want to be bigger than any of today’s acting legends,” said the 15- year-old Grade 10 drama enthusiast. Bigger. that De Niro, bigger than Brando — even bigger than Olivier. And if high school acclamation is a determining factor, Smee is well on his way to joining the ranks of acting’s immortals. Thespians from all over the Kootenays recently gathered at the Nelson Festival of the Arts, four days of high schools preforming plays and attending acting workshops. After the stage had cleared, Smee walked away with three of the festivals top honors — Best Actor, Most Memorable Moment on Stage, and Best Wet Hankie, the festivals tear-jerker award. “Dave Power and I won the most memorable moment because of a fight scene we. did,” Smee said. “That scene really shocked some people. It looked pretty real.” Drama teacher Wendy Voykin says a if anyone earned the awards, Smee Mayor Audrey Moore accepts “Out of the Blue” from artist Lark LampmanTuesday. Many people find it challenging to draw a little stick man. But some people, like Grade 11 Everybody likes. to keep busy doing something — hockey, stamp collecting, or even television: Eric Ruljancich likes to think. “I'd like to be a professional thinker,” Ruljancich said, “but there’s not too many jobs in that.” Maybe there are no jobs, but Ruljancich has proven that thinking | combined with writing can be profitable. Ruljancich, 18, entered the Zenith Masters of Innovation Competition, a North America-wide contest, and finished second overall. Zenith wanted to know how students would use personal computers to make the globe a cleaner place. Ruljancich’s idea was to design a reusable plastic product as a paper substitute, thus eliminating the need to cut down trees. “All printed material in the world would be available on a database. You could call up a book, magazine or whatever, print it up, read it, and then reuse the plastic sheet later.” For his idea , Ruljancich was awarded two Zenith laptop computérs, one for himself and one for his school. “I think this is incredible,” said Castlegar Hospital Auxiliary 3rd Mondays, 7:30 p.m. Hospital board room Next meeting: Apr. 27 365-6587 Castlegar Hospital Board 4th Thursdays Hospital board room Next meeting: Apr. 23, 7 p.m. 365-7711 Castlegar School Board Various Mondays, 7 p.m. School board office Next meeting: Apr. 27 365-7731 Castleview Care Centre Auxiliary 4th Wednesdays, 1:30 p.m. Castle View Next meeting: Apr. 22 365-3754 Christian Women’s Club 2nd Thursdays Masonic Hall Next meeting: Apr. 23 365-5282 Lions Club 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, 7 p.m. Sandman Inn Next meeting: Apr. 14 Regional District of Central Kootenay Various Times Nelson Next meeting: May 9, 9 a.m. 352-6665 Rotary Club Tuesdays, 6 p.m. Sandman Inn “Next meeting: Apr..14 365-2780 Selkirk Toastmasters 2nd and 4th Mondays, 7 p.m. Selkirk College, Room B17 Next meeting: Apr. 13 365-6442 or 367-6549 Selkirk Weavers and Spinners Front of Super Valu Brownies, Guides & Pathfinders Spring Tea April 12, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Legion Hall Castlegar Ladies Golf Club Golf & Luncheon April 14, 8:30 a.m. Tee Off Castlegar Golf Course 365-7442 Selkirk College R.N. And keep on acting. student Lark Lampman, were born to ee Gifted program teacher Chris “I’ve always liked art,” Lampman said, “but the first art course I took was when I was in Grade 6.” Lampman was at Twin Rivers Elementary School when a friend told her about the Robson drawing class. She started out drawing faces, people and the likes, “but now I basically draw everything.” And Art teacher Donald Fyfe-Wilson likes what he sees. “There are quite a number of highly talented people at S.H.,” he said, “but I’ve never seen anything like her drawing ability.” Fyfe-Wilson went on to explain that Lampman has “Bateman-quality” work, after famed naturalist Robert Bateman. “She’s top notch,” Fyfe-Wilson said. “I figure she’ll make a career out of art, and I expect her to be very successful.” Lampman said that while being a true artist is her goal, there’s more too it than talent. “It’s pretty hard getting into the field. Castlegar isn’t exactly the center of computer expertise.” Ruljancich says that while his writing skills are “pretty good,” the key is thinking. “Once I have the idea in my head, the writing comes easy.” If only Socrates had a personal computer... noticed.” When asked which masterpiece she would most like to own — a Picasso, a Rembrandt, a Van Gogh, or what have you — Lampman replied “I wouldn’t mind having one of each, actually.” Who knows. Perhaps one day Lampman will be creating the classics. Chris Foster (left) and Eric Ruljancich will put their hard-earned computers to good use.
