It's a fish n’ chip joint. It’s a sidewalk cafe. It’s a family eatery. You’re absolutely right on all counts. From iced cappuccinos to a favorite wine, the experience is always enjoyable. Better yet, the food is great! The Diner's Tyropita, flaky filo pastry, lightly spiced and stuffed with steamy, melted cheeses, served with a variety of salads has earned a reputation of mythic proportion throughout the West Kootenay. Other delicacies at the Main Street Diner involve unusual combinations such as Steak and Fried Oysters. Rounding out an extraordinary menu, a fish & chip dinner, called The Agean, is served with a choice of Caesar or Greek Salad. Beginning as Milly's Fish and Chips, a tradition of serving good food at this location was established in the late 1970's. Located on the 600 block of Nelson’s Baker Street, The Main Street Diner occupies a narrow former store front. Herein lies the rub. Seating 48 inside and another 12 on the sidewalk when weather permits, the place is nearly always filled to capacity. This is especially true at the lunch and dinner hours. Since the management adheres to a no reservations policy, you are seated on a first come, first serve basis. This is a warning to be prepared to queue up for at least ten minutes at peak hours. This, however, is not necessarily a bad situation. It gives you the opportunity to savor the aromas of the meals being enjoyed around you. Blooming daffodils next spring will brighten the lives of the residents and herald the Canadian Cancer Society’s April campaign. A Castlegar com has been a ‘ierduika eon tract to remodel the Bal- four transfer station. The modifications are expected to improve pub- lic convenience and to re- duce costs. Sorenson Excavating Ltd. is relocating a garbage compactor unit, and is constructing a building which will in- clude a storage area for recyclable materials. According to statistics compiled by the Regional District of Central Koote- nay, the amount of garbage hauled from Bal- four increased by 49 per cent from 1990 to 1991. It is anticipated that the more convenient loca- tion of the compactor will help to reduce the bulk, and thereby reduce the number of trips the RD- CK trucks have to make from the transfer station to the Canex landfill near Salmo. The new arrangement will also allow Balfour area people an opportuni- ty to drop certain recy- clables at the transfer sta- tion, resulting in a fur- ther reduction in materi- al going to the landfill.
