EDITORIALS WHO SAID CASTLEGAR WASN'T PROGRESSING? There have been dark mutterings in many quar-: ters that Castlegar is suffering a depression, that the promises of a boom are not being realized, and: that nothing but stagnation and an insecure. 4 future ‘lie ahead. . These prophecies of doom are bing put to shame by two impressive instances Of ‘faith in the future. of our district—the opening of a large new village office with: provision for future additions, and a magnificent - post office, obviously designed to handle growing vol- “umes of business. One — the Village Office — is a demonstration of faith by the people of Castlegar. ~ The:second — the Federal Building — is a de- Federal monstration of faith by the r at. The third demonstration of faith and magnifi- cent intentions is shown by the four candidates now competing. for the vote in next, Wednesday's election, for each of them is outdoing the others in declara- —-through the promises of the “future Rossland-Trail MLA—be committed to. “press r the speedy con- struction of a “pulp mill at cece: . FALL FAIR—-OR BEAUTY CONTEST? The Castlégar District Fall Fair has once again been a. great success. However, it is with some sad- ness and regret that: we must. acknowledge one ‘fact: the Fair is‘not the affaii of “Castlegar District,” at least not as far as exhibi ors are concerned. As far as exhibitors are concemed, it is a beauty contest, a race, in which'a small number ‘of entrants vie for the highest points from ete’ to prize, from section to section. The Fair-is like a beauty contest in that the girls t who enter and who are ultimately chosen as beauty queens are not necessarily the most beautiful but cer- tainly the most ambitious.” It seems to Us that a small number of verve ‘am-. . bitious and very determined ladies make a profession of winning Fall Fairs. There:is nothing wrong with am- bition, and We cannot’. withold our admirat ion from these highly accomplished entrants: We suggest, however, that’ such single-minded z and formidable opposition tends fo discourage more - timid poténtial .entrants; who perhaps:“excel,, in..a single field. This, in turn, tends to keep the Fall Fair from being representative of. the whole district. White. we would hesitate to advocate- ‘anything that might make the’ Fair smaller, we should like the Falf Fair Board to consider limiting the number of entries permitted any. one person, and/also to exclude entrants who are not residents of the district. : HERE WE GO AGAIN, UN : Even before the 22 nations sat down’ at London to discuss the Suez Canal crisis, president Nasser . of. * Egypt, supported by Russia, made the counter-propo- sal that a ‘different conference should beheld, with’ a far wider attendance, e.g., inviting. a: number of. nations who had not participated inthe 1888 Suez convention, and who. had no ships going through the Z Canal. Britain anid France haughtily rotueed that pro- -posal on practical ‘grounds. The. conference, as. expected, “failed to reach unanimity on the proposals to be ‘made to’ Egypt, as usually. thanks to Soviet intransigence. Nevertheless, the conference sent a délegation to Nasser. to put the. majority proposals to. him. As was _ to be expected, that mission, too, failed. Now Britain and France are threating force; but we doubt that any force will be brought into action because the United'States is not sufficiently int ted -| legislature seats in the for words can never be.
