'54 Flashback Buying a new truck in 1954 by seth Doulton Excerpted from Truckin’ Submitted by Kootenay Cruis¢ it was unusually warm’ for [November and the thought of Christmas (even though & month away) was far from my mind, ‘What was on the top of my mind was to go down and pay John Cameron a visit at the Chevrolet garage. To give you a little background, T’'d been driving my ‘47 half ton for almost stven years and it was time to trade it in on a new one. I saw some photos in one of those spy columns in FLEET REDUCTION VS auto, Casseti, 45,000 km. 9,100 o's Fon tumus °13,900 TOPE eA nn 10,500 an auto magazine at the drug store. It showed what the new Chevrolet trucks were going to look like in 1955 when they made their big body style change. Well, let me tell you that they wete going to look mighty different and I didn’t think they would catch on. There's nothin’ the matter with the tuck they had been making for years, I decided I'd better get one of the good trucks while there were still some left. When I walked into the showroom, Ima (she is the cashier, part-time host- ess, part-time parts runner, and the best coffee maker in town) sat me in John’s office with a cup of her coffee and some sale brochures and told me that John would be with me in a minute. That minute tumed into five, but I needed the time to absorb all the material that she handed me. By the time John greeted me | ‘was just on my way down the path of total confusion. Maybe my memory was failing me, but it sure seemed that when I bought the ol ‘47 he only asked me three questions: what color did I want, bow long did I want the bed to be, and how about a heater? With this new truck, I hadn't got- ten through the dilemma of which color, much less which radiator grill guard or seat cover. Of the twelve colors to choose, I thought the cop- pertone with black pinstriping would be nice although the ocean green with black striping would have really been keen. After about fifteen minutes of talking over the possible colors, engine and transmission options as well as the long list of accessories, I asked John for a copy of the options and price list so that I could mill over the situation and get back to him the next day. To make a long story short, I got the list and put it in my pocket, then went home to sort the whole thing out. The next morning, I was on my way down to order my new truck that would be painted commercial red with argent silver pinstriping. Red! Yeah, the red just kept catching my eye. Some of the factory options back then included: auto transmission for $186.20 versus a four speed for $63.65. Blectric wipers were available for an extra $10.35 and you could have a dually in 3/4 ton for $108. A two- speed axle would have cost $169.75 while two-tone paint was an additional $12.75. Some of the accessories for this Chevy were a gasoline filter, cigarette lighter, arm rests anda visor, each retailing for less than five dollars. A radio was $69.00 and only six dollars and thirty cents to install. ‘That seems like a very long time ago. 2nd Annual Kootenay Cruise June 25, Castlegar Rec Complex. We Have FREASONABLE PRICES The Classic is Reborn Submitted by: Rick Kellen, Castlegar Mazda For years, those who loved the road, the wind, the sky and the stars had cars to satisfy théir passions: the classic roadsters. But then those cars disappeared. The car enthusiasts at Mazda asked, “Why?” and set out to design a modern car that recreated the special feeling and pleasure of classic sports car driving. That car is the Mazda MX-S Miata. Imagine yourself on what just might be the most per- fect two-lane country road in existence, your best friend beside you and the MX-5 Miata’s throaty exhaust growl making you forget all about those cassette tapes you brought along. And then you come to a sharp curve. But then it’s gone. Drop- ping down, then up @ gear so quick and light; the Steering and brakes so, direct and nat- ural that you’re out of the turn, back on the straight, almost without realizing it. Like every Mazda, the MX-5, Miata was designed using Kansei Engineering, our deeply held philosophy that q car must go beyond merely performing right, it must also feel right. Using Kansei Engineering we lear things no computer could ever tell us. Things like how stable the car feels going around a curve; if the exhaust sounds just right when accelerating; even how a driver feels resting an elbow on the window sill.
