LOCAL /PROVINCIAL NEWS Driving A local CounterAttack won't be trying to scare the heck out of people any more. Instead, the Castlegar safety com- mittee will be rewarding sober drivers with prizes which will include, as grand prize, a trip for two to Van- couver. The promotion is part of the new attitude of the local safety committee which works in conjunction with the provincial government’s CounterAt- tack program now in its 14th year, aimed at stopping drinking and driving. The committee, which has operated in Castlegar for several years, revealed its new ideas and new personnel at a meeting April 2. The meeting kicked off the spring CounterAttack program which will begin with a banner-taising ceremony near city hall on April 12, at 12: 30 p.m. This year’s spring CounterAttsck runs from’ April 13 to May 4. Jan Wise, ICBC manager for community programs in traffic safety education, is the new program manager for the committee. Other members include RCMP representative Stan Schmidt, local businessman Serge Plotnikoff, Castlegar fire chief Bob Mann, Ald. Kirk Duff, hospital -representative Les Allen, John D’Andrea from Ceigar and Dennis Tucker from B.C. Tel. Plotnikoff and Schmidt came up with the plan to reward rather than try to scare people. “If drivers go through clean at Police check stops an entry form will be given to them to win a trip for two to Vancouver,”’ Plotnikoff said at the meeting. prt id + karat ir Pulp Co. 75-metre stack. —corvews photo d its stack today a: arf of the mill's $700 expansion and medernieottes phererg The company a led another 15 metres to the Setting up a driver Program for Celgar mill expansion workers based at a camp near the construction site was also discussed at the meeting. Campbell nixes leadership bid OTTAWA — Federal Justice Minister Kim Campbell has ruled out a bid for the leadership of the Social Credit party in British Columbia. “I don’t have any particular en- thusiasm to do it,’’ Campbell said. Campbell entered federal politics in 1988 after two years as member of the B.C. legislature under former Socred premier Bill Vander Zalm. He stepped down in disgrace last week after he was found to have violated conflict-of-interest guidelines in the $16-million sale of his Fantasy Gardens theme park to a Taiwanese billionaire. ““['m very content doing what I’m doing,”’ she said. ‘I’m very con- cerned that British Columbia have a strong voice around the national table.”’ Campbell expressed concern that the party’s caucus appointed Rita Johnston as interim leader even though she has not ruled out a bid for the leadership. “IT just think it’s a dynamic that doesn’t communicate the highest standards of fairness and impar- tiality,”’ she said. ‘‘For the party it’s very important that they consider how the public regards all of this."’ The new leader will be chosen at the party’s convention in Vancouver on July 18-20. Campbell, who held the post of executive director to former premier Bill Bennett, was a surprise candidate in the 1986 leadership campaign that saw Vander Zalm take the party’s reigns. Campbell, 44, said she thought seriously about running but decided she is where she wants to be.
