We understand that the men are keen to go to South Africa, and have already urged to be allowed to volunteer. A book entitled ‘Gold Mines of the World,” written by a Mr. Curle and published in London,con- tains a mass of misrepresentation ‘about British Columbia mines. A few of his blinders are pointed- out by David B. Bogle in a letter to'the British Columbia Mining . Record. He quotes Mr. Curle as saying: “Rossland is a picturesque town of 8000 to 10,000 people railway lines wind up the mountain bearing away piled-up carloads of quartz The town is very flourishing at present, but this state of things cannot last for long.” To this Mr. Bogle replies: “I do not know of any local or other authority that ever claimed more than 80co as an outside esti- mate of Rossland’s population. The description of Rossland ores as “quartz” is rankly misleading; while the statement that the town’s present prosperity cannot endure is absurd. Rossland has 1200 miners working underground. VERY NOTABLE GATHERING Leading Citizens of Rossland Do Honor to the Trusted Officer of the B, A. 0.—News of Buller's Reverse Osils Forth « Burst of Loyalty. It was a crowd of ‘jolly, good fellows” that met at the Allan last night at a dinner in honor of Edwin Durant, to wish him God-speed on his departure for England. Mayor Goodeve was toastmaster, with Mr. Durant on his right and Governor Mackintosh on his left, the latter being hailed as ‘“‘The Pyrite King” when he attracted attention by ris- ing from his seat for a moment. Laughter and jest passed around the table at a lively pace while a very good dinner was being dis- cussed, Mayor Goodeve called for the toast ‘The Queen,” which was drunk with all the usual honors. He then read letters from Lionel H. Webber and J. L.G. Abbott, expres- sing regret at their inability to be present and wishing Mr. Durant Godspeed. The toast of ‘‘The Prince of Wales and the Royal Family” came next, followed by the singing of ‘‘Rule Britannia.” Frank Oliver sang ‘First in the Field,” and then a burst of laughter greeted the presentation of a large bouquet of chrysanthemums to Mr. TDurant by Hon. T. Mayne Daly. The mayor then proposed the toast of the evening, that to Mr. Durant. He recalled how Mr. Du- rant came here asa stranger at a critical time in the history of the city. Mr. Durant was a jolly good fellow, but he had a serious side and had great ability. He must have it, to be sent from England to Death of Mra. Mowgrove. Mrs, Alice Mosgrove died on Friday evening at 10 o’clock at 81 Thompson avenue, where her son and two daughters have been watch- ing over her for several months. She was in her eighty-fifth year and her death is attributed to old age. The remains have been embalmed and will be taken on this evening’s train to Ottawa by Miss Mosgrove. When he left England he was told that he would have to fight his way through Indians. He spoke of the warm welcome he received, said he had simply done his duty, and, if he were half as good a fel- low as the men .about him, should be very well satisfied with himself. He owed his success to Governor Mackintosh, and with very great regret saw the governor's resigna- tion forced on the London board. Rossland was-known as the Golden City, and the governor had done as much for it as any man, Major Collins had told him that it would only be a year or two until the promises made by the governor would be fulfilled. Mr. Bernard Macdonald had expressed his re- gret at not being able to be present. He had known Mr. Macdonald by name for a number of years and 25 years ago he had been a close ‘associate of Mr. Whittaker Wright. Mr. Macdonald predicted a very bright future’ for the camp. Mr. Durant closed with a tribute to Mr. Morkill.and others who had been |associated with him in the service of the B. A. C. and wished all his friends a merry Christmas and a happy new year. The whole party sang ‘‘Beauti- ful,” and then Mr. Daly, with a humorous speech, presented Mr. Durant with a bouquet of roses.- James: D. Sword sang ‘‘Cardigan the Fearless,” and A.
