Is the one given this. week at the International. _‘‘The musical bur- lesque is entitled ‘‘Why Smith Left Home,” and it’s no wonder,.as such a bright entertainment is enough to entice any benedict from his firesidé for a pleasant evening. It is all laughs this week, barring the ‘‘Miser” scene from ‘‘Chimes,” which is introduced by Mr. Wansor, and which is a splendid piece of character acting. The burlesque contains most of the melodic gems which have made the ‘‘Geisha” such a success, and every thing is done, and well done, to cause one to laugh and forget the blues. Dull times are not noticeable at the Interna- tional. New faces were Mlle Ka- tinka, Kittie Houston and the Vita- scope, all of which gave good satis- action. Same show this week. No Cause to Reply. Socrs Burn a Natal Town, While the Boers and British in the Orange Free State are taking to enjoy a rest, those on the borders of Natal are beginning to show activity. A special dispatch from Durban says the town of Pomeroy, 30 miles east of Ladysmith, has been burned by the Boers. A Brit- ish detachment, arriving at Pome- toy as the Boers evacuated the place, shelled the burghers, but they succeeded in taking up a strong position in the hills with a forge estimated to number 5000. BoorsStampede to Surrender London, March a2.-—Lord Rob- erts telegrap from BI under-date of March 21 as follows: "So many burghers have expressed a desire to surrender under the terms of the last proclamation that T have sent small columns in various directions to register their names and take over their arms. : “‘A cavalry brigade has gone to the eastward of Thabarnchu, and a detachment from Springfontein has ‘| occupied Smithfield, where ‘some Transvaalers and a wagon with arms.and ammunition were cap- tured. ALL WAITING FOR RELIEF While Congress Wrangles for Political Effect, Thousands of People Are Literally Naked— Governor Davis Has Given the Facts and ‘Will Not Disouss the Issue, By Associated Press. New York, March 22.—Describ- ing the present condition of affairs in Puerto Rico, the correspondent of the Journal and Advertiser at San Juan says: “The people are too weak to re- sist bayonet rule, but their love fot the United States is changing to apathy or fierce hatred. In San Juan one can hear on nearly every street half naked children .sing the American national hymn. The scene is patherie: It is almost ig- noble. -“But from the district of Cacao comes a message that more than 1000 women in that neighborhood cannot leave their huts, because they have noclothes. The same~ reports come trom other districts. There are probably 30,000 naked women inthe mountain districts. There are thousands of children who , cannot attend school, because the teachers refuse to receive them stark naked, as they present them- selves.” General Davis is quoted in an in- terview as saying: E F “*We shall’ spend most of the money furnished by congress in ately after the destruction of the old hinery. Io speaking of the work in hand, he said to a RecorD representative: ‘We intend to put a new wire from Nelson to New Denver where it will join the one from the main line of the railroad and give us a new througin line to the coast. When this is done, we shall use the present wire from Nelson to the coast by way of Kaslo and Sandon for local business only. This will give us a duplex system to the coast. With the main line, the Crow’s Nest line and the connection at Spokane and Portland with the Postal wires, we have practically three routes from the east and west to Rossland. For the last week our service over the Crow’s Nest line has been hampered by our having to move the line off 8 miles of the right-of- way between Nelson and Balfour in order to be out of the way of con- struction, but this will be finished tomorrow.” For the best, cleanest and cheap- est coal, call or phone Martin Bros. building roads. Victoria, March 22.—Premier , Martin is again on the mainland, where he is renewing attempts to secure cabinet @inisters. The lat- @st name connected with a cabinet ost is A. B, Clabon, of Rossland, who, it is said, has been offered a portfolio by Martin. A good deal of comment is caused by the tact that steps in regard to the seizure of ties and timber on the Crow's Nest ‘railroad were made by Martin, although the mat- ter is clearly within the province of the chief commissioner of lands and works, showing that the premier is practically running alt departments.
