myself in administering the affairs of the Association. AS I SEE IT WITH HARR Y PEPPER All in all , it has been a busy week for yours truly . We've had a Soccer meeting, Fish Derby Annual Meeting, Skateathon and the Legion One-Day Bonspiel. Taking them in that order , the Soccer meeting was well attended , and we were able to get the groundwork laid for another season. The format to be followed during the coming season will differ somewhat from that of past years. This year we will establish house teams in much the same manner as that which the Minor Hockey Association followed during the past season. Our reason for doing this is necessitated by the fact that there is no way in which we can afford more than one team in each division of the league in which our teams play . Therefore, we will register all the boys who wish to play soccer this summer and form as many house teams as we can. From this nucleus will come the Rep teams in each division. There will be no set Rep team and each boy will be judged by his efforts as to whether he is picked by the division management and coaching staff to play in individual league games . Registrations will be taken at the City Hall on Saturday, April 8th from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and on Tuesday evening, April nth from 4 to 6 p.m. Holdovers from last year's coaching staff who have signified a willingness to assist again this season are Jack Fisher, in a limited capacity, Gerry Bowen and John Hughes . Add to these Ernie Jacobson, who helped in a coaching capa city last season, and Juvenile stars Dave Martin, Joe Hughes , Lorne Lambert and Tommy Stanton . The last two boys have agreed to handle the " Mosquito' ' division , which was handled last year by presidentelect , Cy Lambert. Another newcomer to our board will be Bill Parkinson, who will join Mrs. Cox and chairman Johnny Mowatt to the tiniest youngster who skated, regardless of whether they made the required number of laps or not. There were some outstanding performances which went to build the event into the huge success it was . I heard all kinds of stories in regard to personal efforts by some people and groups of youngsters . Lyall LaFace collected some $!80 in pledges and the kids of the McLean School topped the $2000 mark and veteran RCAA members George Dyson and Jack cox made good showings on the blades . They tell me that George added a special flair as he rope-skipped twice around the ice surface to add yet another donation to the growing pile of pledges . These are only a small sample of the concentration of effort that went into putting this event over. Chairman Johnny Mowatt told me in a phone conversation Tuesday evening that he expects, when all pledges are honoured , that the total take will run over the $500 mark, a real stunning success story' I consider. When I relayed this info to RCAA prexy Jack Cox, he said it was a fine effort, but we cannot lose sight of the fact that almost twice this much is needed for the machinery required, and a company which will supply this article on terms has riot yet been found. So come on, put all your things together and see if we can come up with something to put the needed bread on the RCAA table. It would be a shame to let the magnificent effort of the weekend go for naught. 2J On Friday evening the annual meeting of the Irvin Hotel Fish Derby was held upstairs in the hotel and was well attended , with some thirty participants . President Gerry Flanagan called upon secy-treas . Bill Lukkar for the reading of the minutes of the previous annual meeting, which were accepted as read , after which a report on the recent social evening which was held in the Masonic Hall a couple of weeks back was read into the treasurer 's report and was accepted . Next business of the meeting was the election of officers and president Flanagan was returned for another term , in a fourway battle with Bert Molnar, Bill Lukkar and " Doc" Halladay . Hotel owner Ray Wesemann was sent to the post of vice-president to replace " Buck" Jones and 19-year-old Gordon Cardwell was named secy - treas . This year 's exec . will consist of eight board members in comparison to last year's seven. Vic Mattiazzi, Bill Lukkar, " Doc" Halladay, Doug Harrison, Bob Glover , Clay Cure, Bert Molnar and Bert Morrow were elected and Steve Bowen, Cam Jensen and Eger Jensen stepped down . Ddcisions taken at the meeting included lowering the age for membership to 19 years and to continue to bar women from becoming members of the oneday Derby held annually at Sheep Creek. President Gerry has asked me to express his regret for not having thanked his last year' s exec . for the excellent job they did for him during the past year and express the hope that all newcom ers and holdo\·ers this year will do as well. The other event which occupied part of the Arena on the past weekend was a real fun thing . It was the annual Legion One-day spiel held Sunday. I had signed up as a spare, mainly because of the fact I have done a very limited amount of curling this winterand didn't really expect to have to do any curling. However when I arrived at the rink , " Red" Heywood , who is publicity man for the local branch of the Legion, was without a rink . As I told him later that day , the acquisition of myself, plus burly exYorkton Terrier defenceman Lloyd Reynolds and Harry Cardwell , didn't prove that he had one anyway . But we did win one game and had lots of fun talking and imbibing some of that liquid that Fernie is famous for , to say nothing of the snacks provided and the grand supper which finished off an almost perfect day . The supper was a credit to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Legion and was really enjoyed by all. Legion President Gil Jensen thanked all who took part and invited everyone back next year. He had a special word for the man who does such a magnificent job every Legion Spiel Day , Desi Monaghan, and this certainly met with everyone 's approval. The Skate-athon which was held at the Arena the past weekend was a well - handled event and everyone who was connected with it is lo be con gratulated for their efforts . That includes everyone who took part, from committee Winner of the " A" event of the three-game total -point competition was the Ted Wiltshire rink composed of Bert Morrow at third , Willy Dorey, second and Carl Osing, lead. Runner-up was the Bill Vickers foursome. Bill had Richie Watkinson at third , Frank Moran of Castlegar, second and " Little Joe " Thalman, lead. The " B" event was taken by the Phil Bateman rink. Phil had Keith Woods at third , Charlie Miller, second and retired one-time Trail Blazer hockey coach Bill Duchak, lead . Winding up in second place in " B" was the Tommy Clark rink composed of Fruitvale's " Red " Thomas at third , Lefty John Sawyer , second and Legion barkeep " Rusty " McMillan leading. 2 4-
