GG. 4/95 survey conducted for the ministry during Expo. A new advertising focus is part of the ministry's push to promote cultural tourism — the urban attractions of B.C. — to a more sophisticated American market, said Kathy Vinton of Tourism B.C. The $300,000 campaign is being undertaken jointly with Canadian Pacific Air Lines. “It's as a follow-up to Expo. The emphasis is on the cul- tural side of B.C.; millions travelled here for Expo and now the message we want to get across is that there are cultural reasons to visit B.C.” B.C. Tel settles contract VANCOUVER (CP) — British Columbia Telephone Co. has reached a tentative agreement with its 10,000 workers, a company spokes- man says social allowance re- cipients could lose their gov- ernment cheques if they re- to participate in cued work, tasiseiters not foreing them to work,” he added that welfare recipients could face-being-cut off from social assistance. Jim Dau, a Social Services Department spokesman, noted the government cur- rently requires employable recipients to show they are actively looking for work to avoid being cut off from as- sistance. Quaker to appeal tax court ruling VANCOUVER (CP) — A Vancouver Quaker said she plans to appeal a Tax Court of Canada decision that says she cannot refuse to have her taxes used for military purposes. Dr. Jerilynn Prior, an en- The docrinologist who teaches at the University of B.C. as well as having a private practice, said in an interview she would be willing to go to jail for her beliefs. “I have a family, I have patients,” she said. “But this comes right out of the core of who I am.” At the end of 1982, Prior owed the federal govern- ment $15,957.87 in taxes. Be- cause 10.5 per cent of the federal budget went to de- fence, she deducted 10.5 per cent of her tax bill and put it in a trust fund administered by a group ealled Conscience Canada. Conscience Canada, which grew from a committee of Quakers, has been trying to persuade Ottawa to earmark the money in the trust fund for non-military purposes. “I've been opposed for religious and conscience rea- sons to war for as long as I can remember,” said Prior. “As I wouldn't fight a war, I thought I should not pay for it either.” She has sent a portion of her income tax to the fund each year since. Mr. Justice Guy Tremblay ruled Monday in Ottawa that Revenue Canada’s right to collect taxes overrides an in- dividual’s freedom of cons- cience. Prior is one of 370 people who have contributed to the Peace Tax Fund, said Edith Adamson of Victoria, pres- ident of Conscience Canada. The fund has a balance of about $109,000.
