Balance That lopsided Room Some rooms in your home actually appear to be ‘liltiig because there is too much heavy texture and weight at one end of the room. The room needs balancing. Colors, furnishings, pat- terns and architecture affect balance the most, For example, if one end of your living room has a brick fireplace, dark panelling and big chunky fur- niture is placed near it, while the rest of the room consists of off-white walls, light-colored draperies and spindly or sparse furnishings... the room {s not balanced. Placing a light-covered sofa in front of a panelled wall anda wooden.or dark-finished stereo in ‘front of the ivory wall opposite helps balance the two. Each is a contrast with it's background and color-wise bal- ances the room. When the TV is at one end of the room and all’ the furniture is at the other end it will appear to be crowded and unbalanced. This is not only true for furnishings and colors, but even in the smaller accessories, The small cushion should be placed in front of the larger one. A circular onc in front of a square one... too many shapes in the same room can also create poor balance. They say every room should have at least one curved piece, since most of our con- temporary furnishings are square and straight-lined, Pictures on the walls should be balanced with the furnishings they are hungabove and this is why a small picture may be hung very low to one side of a lamp at eye level when seated.
