Seniors Games last week. Perhaps carrying the pretti- est colors of them all on the Zone 6 team was Castlegar swimmer Dorothy - Martini who was, in fact, a perfect 10. That’s a perfect 10 as in one gold, six silver and three bronze medals at the fourth annual Games in Coquitlam from Sept. 4 to 8. In total, the 16-member swim team, who dubbed themselves the Kootenay Cocoons (after the motion pic- ture Cocoon), won 53 medals (seven gold, 20 silver and 26 bronze) at the Games. “It was above and beyond all expectations,” said seniors sine club co-coach Norma “I thought they’d win a few (medals) but gee, they just really outshone everybody.” Competing in the 60-64 age category, Martini set a Games record in the 25- metre backstroke, while the Medal Mania: Castlegar athlete Dorothy Martini won 10 medals in swimming team set seven records in events at the B.C. Seniors Games Sept. 4-8 in Coquitlam. total Ed Mills SPORTS EDITOR They bagged them in bagpip- ing, biking and badminton. They grabbed them in golf and they snagged them in slo-pitch and snooker. Seniors from across the West Kootenay filled their suitcases full of medals at the B.C. Seniors Games in Coquitlam from Sept. 4- 8. While the swimmers led the way with a haul of 53, the 118- member Zone 6 teams had its best-ever performance at the Games picking up 76 medals. “I think we had 31 medals last year, 80 it’s really jumped,” said Zone 6 coordinator Lola Turick. “We really, really did well. We're very, very pleased.” The Numbers, page B4 Of the 22-member Castlegar contingent, Katherine Hominiuk horseshoes respectively. Castlegar’s Otto Walker won bronze for low net in men’s golf while Betty Langille of Genelle got the same in women's horseshoes. Bill and Verna Keraiff, Dorothy Best ever showing for local seniors Raymond and John Moran were the Castlegar connection on the silver medal winning slo-pitch team. Zone 6 owned the biking events at the Games as Jack Tees of Slo- can, Roland Anderson and Matilde Klassen of Nelson, and Helen Bourchier of Rossland Zone 6 also got a silver medal in snooker and a bronze in women’s badminton. Registration at the Games was up 25 per cent this year as some 2,000. athletes from 12 zones across the province competed. “Everybody's trying to do something wonderful, but we're also trying to finish the damn races,” a smiling Martini said Tuesday. Martini wasn’t alone in doing something wonderful as multi-medal perfor- mances were turned in by Chuck Wools of Fruitvale who won seven, and Gus Conacher of Montrose and The Numbers, page B4 Bill De Klerk of Nelson, who won six each. Martini said the Kootenay Cocoons, in their matching suits and caps, were the life of the Games party. “We had more fun I'll tell you. We cheered louder than any team down there.” And her family were cheering pretty loud when she got home to a congratulations party complete with balloons and banners. “T phoned (a relative) from Penticton and I guess she passed the word on.” The 16-member swim team, which held weekly practices at the Castlegar Aquatic Centre, had nine Castlegar members, inc- luding organizer Bill Van Yzerloo, who won five medals himself.
