The Rebels open their home exhibition season tonight in a game against Beaver Valley at the Complex. Game time is 8 p.m. . New coach getting this year’s Rebels ready I Gary Sauer hopes to make things sweet as the new coach of the Castlegar Rebels Jonathan Green SPORTS REPORTER In some ways, the Castlegar Rebels were a lot like the Titanic during the last hockey sea- son. The journey looked promising for the good ship Castlegar when it left port for the 1991/92 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season in October. New coach Kevin Cheveldave returned to his home town to coach the team he once played for, and was optimistic heading into his inaugural season behind the bench. “It’s looking good right now dently say I know we'll do well this year,” he said. But like the famous luxury liner, the Rebels sailed into troubled waters they never really sailed out of. The team lost more than they won in the early going, but looked to be turning things around in late November when they took on a lot of water after hitting an iceberg in the form of a nasty losing streak. Shortly after, Captain Cheveldave aban- doned ship, and the Rebels drifted aimlessly before Gordie Walker assumed the wheel. The Rebels reacted to Walker, winning a few before being torpedoed by the league-leading Nelson Maple Leafs in the playoffs. Cap that off with uncertainty about the team’s future and, by season’s end, the Rebels looked more like a team that was closer to sink- Enter Gary Sauer. Sauer comes to the team with a wealth of hockey experience, from several years with Regina and Weyburn in the Saskatchewan league to coaching local peewee house. A resident of Castlegar for the last three years, Sauer is ready and willing to run the Rebels. “I haven't coached at this level before, so it’s going to be quite a challenge,” he said Thurs- day. Although new to the team, Sauer is all too familiar with how things have gone for the Rebels in years past. He said the lack of discipline the team showed last season has no place in hockey, and it’s something he and Walker won't tolerate. “One of the big points were going to stress is discipline on and off the ice,” he said. “Once we get down to the team, discipline is No. 1.” Sauer said in addition to having a disci- plined team, he wants one that will put fans in the seats. “We're going to try our best to get people out,” he said. And to do that, he said it will take a team a little less interested in fighting and one a lot miore interested in excitement. “We're going to have a fast-skating, hard- hitting hockey club,” he said. With close to a week of training camp behind him and his first home game behind the bench tonight against Beaver Valley, Sauer isn’t mak- ing any promises about the upcoming season other than that he will do what he can to put an entertaining team on the ice. “We're going to take what we've got and build the best team we can with them,” he said, adding that the Oct. 9 season opener can't come soon enough for both the coaches and players. “We're looking forward to it.” Need a car loan?
