T= saying ‘on Saint Patrick’s Day everyone is an Irishman” couldn’t be better demonstrated than by the amount of people who wear green If you are one of the unlucky ones who didn’t wear green today you probably know by now that you’ll get pinched for that greenless transgression. Only on Saint Patrick’s Day will you be able to order green beer, or green milk shakes, or the green luncheon special. In some bigger cities a parade is held, and every store You frequent won’t forget to remind you that it is Saint Patrick’s Day. By the end of the day you are greened out. But wasn’t it fun? But what exactly are we celebrating when we celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day? istory books say that Saint Patrick was a mis- sionary to Ireland in approximately 400 A.D.. Although Patrick was not born in Ireland, but rather Britain, he became the most loved of all Irish saints. . At 16 he was captured by Irish raiders and was shipped to Ireland. When he reached Ireland, Patrick was then sold as a slave to an Irish chieftain. and began six long years in bondage as a shepherd During his indenture Patrick had lots of time to think. Although never overly religious, he was said to have received a “sign” in his sleep to go out and preach to the pagan” Irish. Shortly after receiving his “sign” Patrick escaped by travelling 200 miles to the coast -of Ireland where he “secured passage on a ship. After a three-day voyage the ship landed beside a desert which he then wandered Bi through for 28 days. When Patrick re-united with his family in his homeland his dreams ed w and thoughts were haupted by “‘the voice of the Irish”, and so Patrick returned to Ireland to preach Christianity. While in Ire- land Patrick endured many hardships, even imprisonment. His British colleagues despised him and called him illiter- ate, but Patrick continued preaching the gospel and car- ried the gospel into the far regions of Ireland where no other missionary had been before. Legend has credited Saint Patrick with many feats, but the one he will be most remembered for is ridding Ireland of it’s poisonous serpents: Irish lore said that Saint Patrick drove the slithery serpents-up to the top of mountain where he then banished them into the ocean below. Saint Patrick is also credited with lighting a fire of snow and -planting the first shamrock in Ireland. He is said to have used the shamrock to represent the Holy Trinity (The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost) during his preachings. The word shamrock is anglicized from the word seamrog, which means trefoil, or three-leaved. The shamrock has since become the most-recognized symbol of Saint Patrick’s Day. Saint Patrick died March 17, 493 A.D., and in honor of his life and death Saint Patrick’s day has been celebrated since. In North America Saint Patrick’s Day was first cel- ebrated in Boston in 1739. Ireland has given many gifts to Canada, such as their laughter, music, and most notably their toe-tapping jigs. In honour of Saint Patrick we would like to close this story with some traditional Irish blessings. May God speed you on your way and see you home safe, may God and His Holy Mother take the harm of the year away from you, may the roads rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall softly upon your fields, and until we meet again may God hold you in the palm of His hand. May the blessed sun shine upon you, and warm your heart until it glows like a great fire, so that a stranger may come and warm himself at it, and also a fnend Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
