ROSSLAND EVENING RECORD, SEPTEMBER 29, 1899- , BALLOONIST HERE. Professor Frank r, tho Acronaut, | Arrives. Mr. Miller, the great balloon ex- pert and parachute jumper, arrived last night from the south, where he has beer giving exhibitions of his wonderful skill in the air-jump- ing line. He was very busy last evening at the hotel relating some of the many hair-breadth escapes he has had since adopting the profes- sion of a balloonist. Miller has been over nineteen years in the bus- iness, and of course has been through the experimental course, has now brought his work up to the high standard of an accomplish- ed art, he being as much at ease and at home in his parachute in the air, athousand feet or so from earth, as the average individual is while strolling on the street. The exhibition to be given at the park on Sunday next will have a large attendance as Prof. Miller's reputation is well known to the public generally. MITCHELL ON THE STAND (Continued from First Page) membered the time when the Chi- naman offered him $45 as a license for gambling and he instructed him to go down to the office or the mayor. He had never given it a thought whether or not it was right for a man to offer him a bribe. It had happened over a year ago be- fore, when a man named Harris had offered to pay him money if he could run a wheel during the races. He thought it was a roulette wheel. He had declined to listen to him. He had reported the matter to the chief. He had been offered $5 by a girl named Jchnson, who had been soliciting. He could not ac- count for the fact that he was the only officer who had been offered a bribe. He had heard of bribes be- ing offered to other police officials. After long fencing, he said that May Mahoney and Nellie Garrity had said they had.paid the sergeant |‘ $5, and they had told him about it next morning because they were pulled.then. The money was said to be paid to hush up a row in the house. Both girls had told him about it. He had not reported the matter to the chief because he did ‘not think it right to tell on one an- other. The cross examination was then taken up and the Chinatown raids were referred to, and the trouble with the colored man at the Co- lumbia hotel, but without result. He was not supposed to have war- rant or summons to go into the houses on Lincoln street and the “Row.” There was truth in the statement that he had been in the house Belle Burns spoke of, but he had never kept company with the inmate. The jail accounts were taken up next and the meat voucher for April. He admitted that owing to the orders he had received milk and sugar were charged as coal oil, and a turkey and chicken were charged as beef. Some time in February Judge Jordan had told him that he ought to board in the jail on the city’s account instead of his own as heretofore. Following this came a very searching examination into the reason why he had refused the Chinaman’s offer of $45, without eliciting any information. To Mr. Macdonald: When Judge Jordan had told him to board at the jail Mr. E. J. Grant was present,|. and in his presence the judge had told him it was right for him to board at the jail but he would not take any responsibility about: falsi- fying the accounts for meat. This was just before Judge Jordan left for the east. The witness was then excused \to tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock whén Chief Ingram will be placed on the stand. WILLIAM MITCHELL'S CASE. The Magistrate Dinml Againat In the police court this morning the first case called was that against William McCullough, charged with wounding Louis Blue’s dog. In the decision, which had been re- served, ‘Magistrate Boultbee an- nounced that the defendant would be fined $10, which was paid. Then came the case of the Queen vs. William Mitchell, and Mr. Mac- d the Charge donald, ‘who appeared ,for Mr. Mitchell, asked that the case be dismissed for want of prosecution and atter some argument in which Mr. Beamish tried to insist ona further adjournment, that action was taken, and Mitchell’s bail money was returned. “syolly, Yovial, Yental.??
