The commonwealth witnesses were called, numbering 50. County At- torney Polsgrove announced - that | he was ready for trial of the case. The ex-governor read the warrant against Powers, charging him with. being an accessory to the murder of William Goebel, and asked dismis- sal of the defendant on the ground that the warrant was fatally defec- tive in not alleging that -the crime was notcommittedin Franklincounty and that it did not even show the offence to have been committed in Kentucky. Judge Moore overruled the objection to the form of the warrant. TO SHOW BOER CORRUPTION ATrial Which Will Expose Bribery of Kruger and His Chiefs. By Associated Preas, New York, March 23.—A_crimi- nal .case which will attract the greatest interest in America and in all countries where the struggle between Great Britain and the Boers is exciting attention, will be heard on June 11 before the Brussels trib- unal, says a Brussels cable to the Herald. .[tis a trial which will put to the test the accusation of corruption brought by the English government against the’ Boer of- ficials in general and President Kruger in particular. The parties concerned are the well known financers, the Baron Oppenheimer, of the firm of Oppen- heimer Freres, Louis and Henry Warant, Belgian barristers; M. Braconier, a wealthy Belgian capi- talist, of Liege, and another Bel- gian, M. Terwange, all of whom were associated for some years as lessees of the Transvaal railway, which was to connect Komati port with Selati. The Transvaal government com- plains that, by producing false ac- counts, the company claimed from them an amount of interest largely in excess of the capital subscribed or required. According to infor- mation given out, the company’s directors, who are being prosecuted on this charge, allege that they were compelled to make the charge higher, in order to conceal the bribes which they had to pay Presi- dent Kruger and his familiars and most of the members of the Pretor- ia volksraad, including some of the generals now et.gaged in the war.
