Critics object to calves be-
ing separated from their
mothers at: birth, kept in
cramped indoor pens with-
out exercise and often fed an
iron-deficient milk formula to
keep their flesh white.

The demonstrations over
the next few weeks will be
the first protests in Canada
against cruelty in “factory
farming,” says Marlene La-
kin of Toronto, Canadian co-
ordinator of a coalition of
groups urging a-boycott of
Burger King outlets.

Agriculture Canada says
446,502 calves were slaugh-
tered.for veal in Canada last
year, 276,663 in Quebec,
where the dairy industry
provides a ready supply. of
unwanted’ male calves.

The department says
white veal calves, normally
slaughtered within 16 weeks,
are taken from their mothers
shortly after birth, tethered
in small cubicles and given an
iron-deficient milk formula
“that causes anemia but pro-
duces white flesh. Bedding is
not permitted because it
tends to darken meat when
eaten.

Non-white veal calves are
allowed roughage and grain,
which turns flesh pink, but
otherwise are raised in simi-
lar conditions as white veal
calves, Agriculture Canada
notes.

Anna said.

But Friday morning, the collapse was sudden and
devastating.

“This must have hung up, and then come down all at
once,” he said.

The gob, or mined-out portion of the fatal sub-level,-

could have been about 100 metres long — about the length of
a football field — 80 metres wide, and as much as 15 metres
high, De‘Anna said.

The two miners killed were in the narrow part of the
sub-level, and the construction of the narrow ‘passage
created the velocity and turbulence.

“One of the men weighed 220 or 230 pounds and was
tossed about 200 to 83 feet,” De Anna said. “He was in a cage
protected by a steel roll kar and canopy It was blown about
300 feet.”

One of the miners at the seene said that a boulder
“about the size of a good-sized office desk — about half a ton
— was thrown 200 feet,” De Anna said.

Once the blast of air hit the main shaft, its force quickly
dissipated, De Anna said, although it created a vacuum in an
adjacent sub-level, sucking the air out of it and depriving
several miners there of oxygen for a moment.

Miners further along the main shaft felt some air
movement and began to investigate, De Anna said, but
people outside the mine would have noticed nothing.

He said there have been no other injuries reported,

_ although all men who were underground were being checked

thoroughly.

There usually are 60 to 80 miners working at various

jobs throughout the mine at any given time, De Anna said,
but there were only about a dozen in the immediate area,

, and only the two victims were in the affected sub-level.

“The men are well protected against rock falling in the
passage,” De Anna said, “but that is one thing they are not
protected from.”
