and I were taken on an official
trip to the Mayan ruins in the
junble where I found two old
friends waiting. They had bro-

course meal but neither of us

share one passion though —

That's when the loneliness
really hit me.

permitted himself a night off. If

Pierre handled the remote
control buttons masterfully,
switching on one scene from a
dreadful horror movie, to a bit
of a great drama, toa long look
at a western shoot-out and even
to.a soft porn movie.

Our third son, Micha, ar-
rived on October 2, 1975. I was

delighted. Two babies (on ‘

-going to be bringing up children
in a house full of servants. So

anyone. Nor are they allowed to
be punished by the staff. We
made constant: efforts to pre-

vent the children exploiting the , '

servants. We didn't want them

‘to expect to be waited on, so

they had to get their own
glasses of water and clean up:

their own toys.

My rebellion started in
1974, From then, until the day I
walked out of 24 Sussex three
years later, it built momentum
in fits and starts. It took many
different forms: a sad ending of
my love.for Pierre, a return to
the inner turmoils and con-

_ fusions. of the weeks after’

Morocco, a sense of mounting
claustrophobia.

”: The first visible explosions
were all directed at the official
life, by sad irony the very life of
protocol and formality that I
had finally and so painfully
mastered. By 1974 I had
become good at it, very good at
it. But it was too late and I
certainly ‘hadn't managed to
make’ it fun,

Pierre began, to find, my

rebellion tedious, and so did the
Canadian public. My

“And when one of them
whispered in my ear: “We've
got something for you,” I didn't’
protest. I left my bag on the’
ground near the car while I
went to look at the ruins.

When I got back our police-
man hurried up to me. “I think
you should know, Mrs, Tru-
ideau, that that girl has slipped

- something into your bag.”

“Thank you so much. Those
must be the cookies she told me
about.” And, opening my bag, I
drew out. the biscuits I had
packed’ from my breakfast
table.

Tucked underneath was a
little plastic -sack. of’ peyote
mushrooms, That night I allow-

‘ed myself a secret taste. It

made me look forward to more.
-When we arrived in Cuba,
Castro was waiting on the
runway. I was immediately.
mesmerized by what I saw: a
tall man, with incredibly beauti-
ful eyes, and a wild, almost

fanatical look which made him

physically very attractive.

“When I saw you come
down the steps of the plane,” he
said to me on my first evening,
“I told myself, oh, the prime
minister of Canada had avery
pretty wife. Now I discover
that not only are you pretty,
you are too intelligent for your
own good.”

I fell for it.

He endeared himself to me
by his attitude toward Micha.
In his speech of welcome, he
declared: ,“I ‘am very glad to
have: the “distinguished © prime

minister of Canada and his .

As he led'me out to dance in
my dacollete Valentino dress |
had caught him peering down the
front. He blushed,

“My father.always told me to
look into my partner's eyes when
she is wearing a low-cut dress,"
he sald laughing.
