The Kootenay Canal could
be the next major tourist
attraction for Castlegar.

Castlegar council recently
agreed to consider a Castle-
gar Chamber of Commerce
request to urge B.C. Hydro
to provide summer tours of
the Canal, which lies about 30
km east of Castlegar.

In a letter to council the
chamber wrote, “The Koot-
enay Canal would be a major
attraction to this area and as
aresult, greatly improve the
economics of the West Koot-
enays.” :

The chamber pointed out
the Castlegar, Trail and Nel-
son information centres re-
corded more than 14,000 vis-
itors through the centres in
July and August.

“These 14,020 tourists
from all over the world could
have enjoyed this interesting
and informative attraction,”
said the chamber letter.

The chamber suggested
publishing attractive bro-
chures for free distribution
through the information cen-
tres. “Hopefully tours could
be ready for the. public by
summer 1982,” said the let-
ter.

Castlegar residents are
either .healthier than they
used to be, or just, aren't
using their local hospital as
much anymore.

Castlegar and District Hos-
pital administrator Ken Tal-
arico confirmed Friday that
the occupancy rate for acute
care beds dropped almost 20
per cent this month — from

68 per cent in September to
just 50 per cent in October.

Talarico said none of the
hosptal’s 100 fulltime em-
ployees have been laid off
and none of the wards have
been closed.

However, he said some of
the 60 part-time hospital
employees have been af-
fected by the reduced oc-
cupancy rate.

lation and people are prob-
ably just healthier than else-
where.

Talarico added the occu-,
pancy rate started to climb
again just this week.
