Classified Ads 365-2212 acre Castlégar News By BOB CARRICK ‘The Canadian Press That old clunker of yours is fading fast and you've decided to replace it with a brand new car New cars costing what they do — a Soviet-made Lada, about the cheapest car available, goes for around $7,000 — the chances are good you'll need a loan, The dealer will almost certainly offer to arrange financing, but you should also consider what rates and options the banks offer. Some banks even recommend you visit them before you set foot on a car lot “The loan manager will work out what your payments would be and tell you how much of a car you can afford,” says Randy Kershaw, marketing manager for loans \at the Royal Bank The Royal, as well as the Bank of Nova Scotia which says it pioneered this service, will even approve a loan before you buy your car. “We'll give you a certified cheque and then let you go out and make your best deal,” Kershaw says. In mid-November, Ford Motor Credit Corp. offered top customers an interest rate of 13.75 per cent on a new car loan spread over four years. Better rates are sometimes available from the automakers as an incentive to buy a certain model, or to buy ata certain time of year. At Canada Trust, car buyers can take advantage of the Super Loan, which offers a lower-than-average interest rate that is reset every six months. A Super Loan spread over four years carried a rate of 12.75 per cent in mid-November, while a standard loan — with a fixed interest rate — was pegged at the same 13.75-per-cent rate used by many of the major banks. All banks evaluate loan requests the same way, based on what they refer to as the client's credit-worthiness. “If it's your first job and your first car, you'd pay a slightly higher rate of interest,” Kershaw says. However, don't forget to check for the bells and whistles some banks use to entice prospective loan customers. Shop for car loan The Royal, for example, has a no-charge Shock Absorber feature. In case of an accident in which your car is demolished, this clause ensures you're paid the difference between the car's replacement cost and the amount covered by your insurance company New. cars begin declining in value the moment they're driven off the dealer's lot and insurance coverage applies to this depreciated amount, Kershaw explains. While a majority of new car buyers rely on a loan, paying in cash is preferable because of the savings in interest charges, says financial planner Catherine Munro. “If by any chance you've got $20,000 in the bank or in investments, then you should pay for the car in cash,” she says. If you can't cover the entire *purchase price in cash, use as much as you can spare for a down payment, she says. Munro also advises you set monthly payments as high as you can handle so the loan is paid off quickly. “Sometimes, by the time you pay off the loan, it's time to buy a new car.” Life insurance policies on loans are available for less than a dollar per thousand dollars of principal. They're a good idea if you're afraid your family could be stuck paying off the loan should you die,” Munro says. NOW WHICH CAR While examining financing options, don't neglect doing the legwork necessary to ensure you buy the right vehicle. “We receommend people do their research before going out to buy a car,” says Pat Curran of the Canadian Automobile Association. “They should pretty well know the make and model before they hit the dealership.” A few other tricks might come in handy before you get down to the haggling. For instance, Curran says, consider buying your car in January or February, when business is at its slowest and salesmen may be willing to negotiate a better deal. active This time of year, everyone is thinking about the holiday season. Dec. 21 was the beginning of winter, and for some bird watchers, this is the beginning of the fourth seasonal category for marking their bird checklist on distribution and | abundance of species. This season of year is still a very active time for birds in the Creston Valley. This week there were several hundred swans on Duck Lake, near ‘dar. This is also a good month for sighting bald eagles and other species that migrate through the valley. There are quite a few Canada geese, ducks and raptors (birds of prey) in the valley. Duck Lake and the south end of Kootenay Lake are always good birding spots, according to a news release from the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. This is also the season for the annual (89th) Audubon Christmas Bird Count. This year’s count for the ‘ Creston Valley will be on Jan. 2, 1989. CLASSIFIED SHOWCASE Bodyshops in trouble WINNIPEG (CP) — The Manitoba Public Insurance Corp. has done such a good job reducing accident claims with its surcharges and $350 deduc tible that autobody repair shops are going broke, complain industry spokesmen. “The deductible is ruining our industry,” Henry Carvalho of Four Seasons Auto Body said Brian Klym of King Street Auto Body agreed. “People are terrified of putting in a claim because there are penalties involved.” Klym said his business has de clined by one-third since new Auto pac policies were put in this year Other dealers have their business drop by 50 per cent or more and one result has been layoffs of LAND ACT: in the Nelson Recording District and situated in the vicinity of Ootischenia. In its annual report for the year ending Oct. 31, the number of claims dropped by 20,000 to 229,000, a reduction of $46.6 million. At first glance, Manitoba appears to have extremely low rates for car insurance, with owners of older cars paying as little as $350 a year or so in Winnipeg. But daily use of a car to go to work or school, accidents or im proved coverage can boost that by several hundred dollars. Unless they pay substantial pre. miums for a reduction, owners whose autos are damaged must pay the first $350 of repairs instead of the first $200. Drivers even partly to blame for two a lents within three years must pay a surcharge of $250 a year for the rest of the three-year period Those who cause three crashes in a three-year period must pay $500 a year and those who cause four are charged $750 a year. The auto glass industry has been most affected by the changes. “The penalty is far too severe to fit the crime,” said Tom Johnstone, owner of Accurate Glass. He said two of his trucks were involved in minor fender benders this year with about $250 damage each Both drivers had a previous ac cident and paid for the repairs so he didn’t file claims with Autopac, Johnstone said. “People are afraid of the surcharge | / World-wide FAX service v or Personal Use We've got the FAX!
