CORNED BEEF ENQUIRY.

Now that the question of food for sol-
diera is being « discussed and while the
investigation of the corned beef furn-
ished the American troops during thé
recent war with Spain is attracting the
attention of the world, some potent re-
marke were made by Wm. -J. ‘Wilson,
former’ commissioner of charge and|
founder of the Wilson Packing, Co., now
out. of bnsiness, which supplied the
British Army with canned beef , during
the war.with.the Zulus, are made : pub-
lic, .He.says: ‘There was never auch
an article as canned roast beef for com:
mercial purposes. It is possible ‘to can
it, but too expensive to make 1t practic-
able. Every morsel of beef that is sold
under the label of canned roast beef, is
“nothing but boiled meat.” He did not
hesitate to apeak plainly of it, tor, the
reason that he believes 1t will do the
packing trade good to have the matter
stirred up. When the first Zulu war,
broke out his company was supplying
the English army with. canned com-
preséed beef, not corned beef, but deef
in square cans that had been packed -by
the vacuum pressure. When the Eng-
lish troops were defeated, the Zulue cap:
tured over $100,000 worth of this canned
beef, and ate it, and he says he never

heard of them being made sick by it.

Alderman Clute said at the Tuesday’
evening's council meeting that the city
council could not afford to ‘foul its
neat’? by rescinding its action in passing
the bylaw granting the Bank of Mon-
treal the right to use part of the sidewalk
as an entrance toits new building. The
nest was “fouled” when the council
passed the bylaw, in the face of the ad-
vice of the city solicitor to the effect that
it was illegal, and that the vacation of
any portion of the public highway could
not only be accomplished by submitting
it to the people. There is little ques-
tion, but. that the ratepayers would
have supported the measure at the polls,
The city council cannot afford to have
its nest befouled, neither can the Bank
of Mo. treal afford to tuke the chances of

erecting so valuable a building in open 1

violation of the law.

Itis easier now for the city zouneil
and. the bank, officials to act. lawfully
than to take the chances on the conse-
quences.
