Some of the hotel men, deciding that they could do better by getting their beef in Spokane, cut loose from Burns, and brought their steaks in by ex- press. On trying to purchase pork and mutton from ‘the Burns shops they found, however, that the price of such articles had been raised to them, and would stay raised until the prodigals returned to the - fold and bought all their. products of the Burns company.. Now: the hotel men are trying to geide what ac- tion they will tak Se ioe of Mr. J. A. Iron Mask Nearing the Ledge. ‘Within the next sixty. hours the main ledge of the Iron Mask should be cut by the crosscut from the No, 2 winze. COXEY TO BE A SHIPPER Arrangements Made to Handle Its Ore at Northport. $2.50 PER UNIT FOR COPPER Stoping to Be Pushed and Ore Sent Regu- larly—With s $4.50 Freight and Treat ment Rate Profits Nearly Doubled. The Coxey, on Red mountain, owned by the Montreal Gold Fields, will soon join.the shipping list. The recent development has opened much medium grade gold-copper ore and arrangements have been made to handle a part of it at the Northport smelter. The manager of the Northport works, James Breen, has given a ‘:ight and treat- ment rate of $4.50 per ton from Rossland, on the liberal basis of $2.50 per unit for copper and 95% of the gold and silver values. The importance of such a rate can best be appreciated when com- pared with the old Heinze rate of $11 per ton freight and treatment, with $1 per unit paid for copper. If the-ore carries $20 in gold, one ounce in silver and 3.3% in copper, the comparative smelting charges would be as shown below. In each case 1.37% copper is deducted by the smelter, so that copper assaying 3-3% is actually paid for as running 2%. Here are the figures: HEINZE RATE, Gold, $5 per cent. of $20. Silver, 95 per cent. of 60e. | Copper, 2 per cent. at $1. Total values paid for Leas freight and treatmer Net returns NORTHPORT RATE, Gold, 95 per cent. of $20.. Silver, 95 per cent. of Oc. | Copper. 2 per cent. at $2, Total values paid for.. Less freight and treatment. Net returns. As the tables show, ore which paid only $10.57 net profit at the Heinze rates, now yields almost twice that amount, or $20.07, when handled at the Northport smelter. NEW EAGLES IN TOWN. ‘Two Tame Ones Have Been Brought Over from Brooktyn. Messrs. Macdonald & Murchison this morning received a consign- ment of two black eagles that were captured in their nests near Brook- lyn some time ago. They are about a year old and are as tame as can be. They will be exhibited for a day or two in the window of the firm’s saloon. TO PROVIDE OPERATING ROOMS. Sisters’ Fair Will Go to Help Hospital . Improvements. The new operating rooms to be added upon the Sisters’ hospital will be among the finest in the west. Every sanitary device known will be utized, and the precautions takon will make it as nearly aseptic as modern science will permit, The operating room proder_ will be eighteen feet square, with windows on three sides and large skylights for giving all the light needed in delicate surgery. The floor will be of tiles and the walls of cement, so that the whole interior surface can be thoroughly cleansed. Off the main room will be dressing, preparing and consultation rooms. The coming fair to be given by the Sisters on November 14th, 15th and 16th, will be to secure funds for building this new and most im- portant annex of the hospital.
