But there’s a good chance that, if 1 plowed my land, the river. would flood and wash away the topsoil. — “Because -of-this, I just New Denver - Silverfon. The reat of the time he works as a school bus driver ‘and a fur trapper. He! has lived in the area since 1998 and loves it with a passion. And he has watched it decline as an‘ agricultural area over the years. But he, along with other residents, had hoped there would be ‘changes. when the NDP. government came | to power. “At a meeting. we held about two weeks ago, most of the grumbling was about how the people’ had’ supported the party and now nothing was happening," he said. “Mr. Braun said about 46 waterfront land-owners showed up for the meeting and all were .wortied about the late ‘spring “run-off and the effect it might have ‘on'the rivers. *Mechanization and _pro- gress have’ changed the ‘area quite a bit," he ‘said. “Because of forest ‘logging. and mining Is, water from melting snow flows into the river a lot faster than it used to'do.?. In 1972 Braun lost three acres of land to flooding. “I was compensated by the provincial and federal govern- ments, “But I'd rather that the government had spent money to protect my land rather than pay me compensation for it after it was damaged,” he said, Mr. Braun candidly admits that most people would not turn to full-time farming even if the government immediately began work to protect the farmlands. He said only about three or four could currently be. officially classified farmers (when they earn more than 50 per cent of their income from their farms), “But the day will come when farmers will be essential and this ‘land’ desperately needed,” he said. In a letter to Labor Minister Bill King (the area’s MLA) following: the’ recent meeting of land-owners, Mr. Braun expressed the feelings of most of the area residents, “Recent run-offs are far more devastating than in former years. This. year some hundred. acres could: be lost,” the letter. stated.
