According to Don Robin- son, acting director of the Fish and Wildlife Branch, the origi- nal courses planned under the: bad been temporarily completed and the courses have been reinstated from now March, 197! trapping is to be done in the- most humane way possible. Trapper education is one of the best ways of teaching ethics and humane ways of using legal trapping devices available to- day. The program is also con- sistent with the government's commitment to “eliminate cruel trapping methods”. Several humane trapping~ groups and the Canadian Trap-' pers’ Federation actively sup- port and promote trapper edu- cation in Canada, working The Forest Recreation class of the Forestry Techno-, logy Program at Selkirk Col- lege, were the first to ski the new “Winterberry Trail” at Nancy Greene Lake on Dee. 9. The class had completed con- struction of the trail with the . assistance of course instructor, Rod Loftus. The. project was initiated ‘in the winter of 1978 when - some trail location and clearing work was done by the Park Planning class of the Wildland Recreation Technology Pro- gram. The project provided students with a practical and enjoyable learning experience, and the community with a worthwhile winter recreation opportunity. The students were not alone in “Initiating” the trail to its intended use. Wildland Recreation Technology co-or- dinator, Len Dunsford and in- structors Rod Loftus and Jara Popelkova were joined by Lar- ry Atherton from the forest service, Phil Whitfield from the parks branch, and several mem- bers of the Sons of Norway. Booty Griffiths supplied, the necessary equipment at a _ low special rate, and accompa- nied the group as it made its way along the trail. The Winterberry Trail be- gins at the parking lot at Nancy Greene Lake. By January, there will be a large map of the trail posted on the information shelter, From atgrt to finish ‘the trail is about five kilometres long, and anyone planning to ski the whole route and back: again, should plan on spending the better part of the day to do ithe entire 10 kilometres, There are many pleasant spots for a picnic along the way. The trail leaves the lake about mid-way between the highway: and the southern top of the west end. Small trail- marker signs—a green skier on a white background—have been posted along the way. It winds its way through a succession of natural openings linked by pleasant, easily fol- lowed forest trails. There are many spots along the way affording beautiful views.
