30 years ago are still vivid for most of the 25 or so

“My parents were in a shock when they. found-out

The plight’ of the Asiarmiut attracted a lot of
attention at the time — author Farley Mowat made them
the subject of two books, People of the Deer and The
Desperate People — and the federal government was
criticized for not acting quickly to help them,

But Gabe Gely, an artist who lived at Ennadai Lake
as a weather station operator in 1955 and the organizer of
next month's reunion, won't dwell on recriminations:

“There was famine, the caribou herd was missed,
there were no fox to trade, the people had German
measles and’ strep’ throat. -It was difficult to. reach
: Ennadai, the people were.semi-nomadic. There were 14
families scattered over 50 miles.

“Many spoke Inuktitut only. A delay in communica-
tions caused a lot of grief. It was not like today, you know.
People didn't have radio, TV and the means to provide

right to mix and intermarry here.”

Owlijoot, executive director of the Inuit Cultural
Institute, married an Eskimo Point womdn. He knows he
‘will never again live at Ennadai Lake.
