Brauss. ‘‘The centre has a good
future.””

Brauss has seven recordings to his
credit. The ‘‘poet of the piano’ has
shown his extraordinary pianistic
ability with more than 1,500 recitals,
the release says.

LOS ANGELES (AP) As Beauty
and Beast ended its second season on
CBS, Vincent escaped into the depths
beneath New York City with Catherine
not far behind, screaming his name.

Despite the cliffhanger, the.contem
porary fantasy was not on the schedule
for the fall season, and for a time it ap-
peared Vincent might never surface
again.

Now, CBS has ordered 12 new
episodes, says Ron Perlman, who stars
as the half-man, half-beast Vincent

“The last we heard, CBS said: Be
ready to go back on the air as soon as
possible. So, we're going back into
production at the same time we would
if we had been renewed for the fall
schedule.””

CBS says the show will be back
sometime in the 1989-90 season, But
fans are taking no chances.

“We're letting people know that
Viewers for Quality Television stan
ds ready to channel the passion and en
thusiasm for the show,”’ says Dorothy
Swanson, VQT director. ‘There is a
huge grassroots movement for this
show.’

FANENTHUSIASM

Beauty and the Beast is supported by
three dozen fan clubs, 65 amateur
published magazines and 40. newslet
ters, according to‘Kimberly Hartman
of Fullerton, Calif., who operates
Helpers Network, co-ordinating sup
port from Canada, England and West
Germany

“We knew there’d be a major con-
frontation over not renewing the
show,” Perlman said. ‘*But we went
from not being on the schedule at all to
doing 12 shows. That's something.””

Beauty and the Beast has not done
well in the ratings; in the week ended
July 16 it was in 73rd place. But its
audiences is vocal in its loyalty

At the core of Beauty and the Beast
is the love between Vincent, the man
beast who lives beneath the city, and
Catherine Chandler, a socialite crime-
fighting attorney

The theme goes back to pagan times
and has appeared often in literature.
‘MANY ATTRACTIONS"

“The show has many attractions,
said Perlman, “not the least of which is
what Vincent has gone through in his
own life and that holds hifn back and
limits him. He can see other people's
struggles. He is a champion of the un.
derdog. He gives people his Undivided
attention

“He has an enormous physical
presence that is at once repelling and
magnetic. He’s from a time gone by
His thirst for things of innate beauty is
of the Renaissance. People know that
time spent with this character is time
spent with truth and beauty. He is the
unattainable love.””

CBS, Perlman said, has not
promoted the show adequately

**Here’s a show with a concept that
is so totally different from anything
else on television,” he said

“You havea character who's unique
and larger than life and straight out of
mythology. Instead, the show's been
promoted like it was just another sit
com. It makes you wonder if someone
isathome.””

Economy sluggish in May

OTTAWA (CP) — The country’s
economy grew sluggishly in May, con-
tinuing an erratic pattern in recent
months after robust growth in April
anda contraction in March.

The gross domestic product — the
total value of goods- and services
produced by the country — edged up
0.1 per cent in May, Statistics Canada
said.

The government agency also revised
the economy's growth in April to 0.3
per cent from the 0.5 per cent first
reported.

Despite swings in recent months, the
trend is towards a slowing economy

“The monthly growth rate for the
first five months of 1989 has averaged
0.1 per cent, down from 0.3 per cent in
1988 and 0.5 per cent in 1987,”
Statistics Canada said.

The slowing economy has taken the
biggest toll so far on carmakers and the
smelting and refining and energy in.
dustries in the goods producing sector

MPs who are worried’ about the
proposed new federal sales tax will
have to toe the line.

“There will be no tax revolt in
my caucus,”’ Mulreney said as he
strode through a crowd on his way
to his car during a tour of his
Quebec riding of Charlevoix.

Several Conservative MPs have
voiced concern about the nine-per-
cent tax to be charged on almost

with money in two failed Principal
Group companies will be partially
compensated and Connie Osterman,
the minister in charge at the time, will
be dropped from cabinet, Alberta
Premier Don Getty announced Friday

cent of the money they had tied up in
First Investors Corp. and Associated
Investors of Canada, including the
money they already received, the
premier told the legislature

Getty said he was removing Oster-
man from cabinet, effective today,
because investigator Bill Code’s report
found she failed to enforce regulations
while she was minister of consumer
and corporate affairs.

dependent investigator has found that
the minister was in breach of her public

duties,’’ he said.

About 67,000 investors from across
the country had $467 million invested
in the two companies when the provin
ce cancelled their licences on June 30,
1987. Those with money in. First In-

dollar so far from liquidation of assets

TORONTO (CP) — Profit-taking
moved into New York and Toronto on
Friday after a week that saw investors
showing great confidence in the
markets

The Toronto Stock Exchange's 300
composite index rose, 7.94 points to
finish the day at 3,966.78, a 65.42-
point gain for the week

The Dow Jones average of 30 in
dustrials finished almost even on the
day at 2,635.24, off 0.19. It ended the
week with again of 27.88 points

New York's Friday performance
didn’t surprise many Wall Street wat-
chers.

“I think in some ways today was
kind of a day off,”’ said Hugh Johnson
of First Albany Corp. “It was a day of
rest after the good days we've had
recently.”

A government report showed
U.S. personal income edged up 0.3 per
cent,in June while consumer spending
fell slightly after adjustment for in
flation-boosted ond prices, sending
interest rates loWer, a movement
welcomed by the stock market

Lyle Stein, an analyst with Toronto:
based Nesbitt Thomson Deacon, said
the Toronto market’s showing this
week indicated investors have con
fidence in the way the economy is
moving.

Canadian Pacific stocks continue to
be driven by buying in New York, and,
along with shares in Laidlaw, reflect
more confidence of foreign investors
in Canada, Stein said.
