B.C.'s top broadcaster supports the stay-in-school message BCTV anchor Tony Parsons BCTV anchor Tony Parsons credits a solid education with getting him where he is today. In addition to anchoring British Columbia's most-watched evening newscast, Parsons is BCTV's vice president of news, running a department of 85 people. "Today, a high school diploma is the minimum requirement for most jobs," says Parsons. "Students who don't finish high school enter the work force at a competitive disadvantage." Parsons, who studied radio and television arts at Toronto's Ryerson Polytechnical Institute after graduating from high school, urges young people not to underestimate the importance of proper trainirig. “It helped me acquire the necessary skills to land my first job as a radio announcer,” says Parson. "I think,it's so i for occupational guidance counsellor. Parsons peaks from experience: "My high school counsellor heard me read a paper aloud in class and suggested I investigate a career in broadcasting. Obviously, it was good advice.” Parsons’ news style caught the attention of CETO TV in Topronto while he was working for one of the city's top radio stations. He worked his way up the CFTO ladder from reporter to anchor. He then joined the CTV Network and was transferred to Vancouver. In 1975, Parsons joined BCTV. To anyone comtemplating a career in news ~ or any other field — Parons offers ome sound advice. "It's'a more competitive business world than it was when I started out.
