All meats in the Kootenays and probably throughout the Province have been advanced an average of at least two cents a pound. This advance took place yesterday and is the result of a combination of cir- cumstances, In conversation. with Mr. R. D. Blair of the firm of P. Burns & Co., Mr. Blair said: ‘he chief reason for the advance is the scarcity of stock of-all kinds, and especially of beef and pork. The wholesale butchers are paying 35 per cent. more for live beef, pork and mutton than heretofore, and this advance has been going on since January. The wholesalers have not made acent: since then, but instead have had heavy losses. CUNLIFFE & ABLETT, ENGINEERS AND MACHINISTS. All classes of Repairs and Construction Work Undertaken. In addition to that, gv. d crops of wheat and the good prices obtained for cereals had tended to make it more profitable to dispose of the wheat than to feed it to stock and in Manitoba and the Northwest Territories little attention has been paid to the keeping of the ranges, but the farmers have instead turned their attention to the raising of grain.- “It is only a short time ago since Ontario purchased hogs and’ steers in the Northwest Territories and British Columbia. | Now the posi- tions are reversed and British Cc- lumbia is sending east to Ontario for live stock. “On the coast frozen mutton from Australia is taking the place of the native meat, and the same conditions are prevailing through the province. .A year or two ago the Americans began to purchase all the young steers they could secure in Canada and they have gone on doing it since, until it has become a serious problem where the supply will come from in the near future. **The firm of Gordon & Ironside, of Winnipeg, which is the largest dealer in cattle in the country, has found the difficulties increasing and is not able to fully supply the de- mands made. The wholesalers have advanced the prices from ten to fifteen per cent., and the advance with retailers has been proportion- ate.” INCREASED A ATION. to the primary grade were sent to the new room and placed under the care of Miss Georgina Agnew. who has had experience in Manitoba, and who is known asa_ thoroughly competent teacher. This morning there were over fifty pupils in at- tendance and all seemed pleased with their new surroundings, though the furniture is not at present as good as will be provided later. The rent of the premises is $50 per month and the trustees. expect to receive a protest from the authori- ties at Victoria about the matter, but it was the best that could be done, and,as one of them remarked, “It may hasten the erection of a new building.” Board of Trade Mects Lhursday The regular monthly meeting otf the Rossland Board of Trade will be held in the city hall on Thursday evening instead of Wednesday, as the city hall, will be occupied by the police commissioners tomorrow evening. TODAY'S START AND FINISH Neither Boat Reached the Line Under- tho Time Limit—They Signalled for Tugs— Intense Interest. New York, Oct., 3.—[Special]— The first race of the series for the America cup, between the Colum- bin and the Shanwock, proved one of the most excitable of any yet sailed for the grea‘ st of all.troph- ies, but the boats were becalmed and the race was called off when within three miles cf the finish line, because the time ‘mit o-er the fif- teen-mile course hau expired. The starting gun was fired at 11:12 and the Shamrock appar- ently crossed the line at 11:15 and- the Columbia one minute later. At 11:21 it looked as if the Shamrock was about 200 yards ahead, and ex- citement was intense. Ten minutes later the Columbia crawled up until almost on even terms with the Shamrack, and it looked as if the race would be decidedly slow. Att 11:47, the Shamrock pulled rapidly away from the Columbia, either through a favorable shift of the wind or because of her being a better bout. The Columbia seemed to be dead, while the Shamrock was a revelation to those who thought . her slow in light air. At 11:55 the Shamrock lead by 2 quarter of a mile, but there was a calm, and at 4:55 the time limit of five and one-half hours had expired. At this time both boats.were within three miles of the finishing line, and signalled for tugs. , MR. HAMILTON HAS RETURNED. We hasbeen Arguinz Important Cases Before the Full Bench. Mr. C. R. At the hear- ing in Vancouver before the su- preme court the appeal in the case of Callahan vs. Coplan, a_ well- known mining case, involving the title to a mine in the Slocan district, was also heard. This case had also been decided by Mr. Justice Martin in favor of Mr. Hamilton’s client, Mr. Coplen. Mr. Callahan has since died. , In the former case he was opposed by A. C. A motion was made to advance the price of meals. The proposition was to increase the price at 25c houses to 35c, and others in proportion. No definite action was taken at this meeting but an ad- journment was taken until tomor- row evening at the same place.
