Nice stuff. Some of the names you might know include Joni Mitchell, J.J. Cale, Jackson Browne and The Cranberries. What we hear on this disc is exactly what went out over the air. Alternative? The label fits as well as any. Scan the artists and see if there are any you like or any that make you curious. Key tracks: “Sweet Ride” (Tanya Donelly), “Just Like This Train” (oni Mitchell) and “The City Sleeps” (MC 900 Ft. Jesus). This should enjoy quiet, but solid success. DESIGN OF A DECADE: 1996-1996 Janet Jackson err. Ten years of hits from Mikey’s 29-year-old li’! sister. Design gathers under one roof the best of an impressive list of songs. I like hooks and grooves as much as anyone and this disc is full of both. Decade gathers the best from Control, Rhythm Nation 1814 and Janet, records that have combined to sell some 28 million copies. Also included are a pair of new tracks. Inside is an informative essay by David Ritz and a tedious list of awards and achievements, a self i move ala Mikey. Key tracks: “Nasty”, “Black Cat”, and Runaway.” Janet is the only unspoiled Jackson left and Decade is hugeness bound. VAULT: 1980-1995 Det Leppard (Mercury) Def Leppard follows a b-sides/rarities set with a greatest hits col- lection. I question the wis- dom, but I like the music. The last NEW disc, Adrenalize, came out in April of ‘92 and word is the next NEW album (Slang) is due in April. Meanwhile, Vault will be a popular stocking stuffer next month. I only have Adrenalize on cd, so this is a welcome addition to my racks. The new song is the loagy ballad “When Love and Hate Col- lide.” I like Lepp. better when they say “screw the charts, let’s Tawk!” Key tracks: “Hysteria”, “Pour Some Sugar On Me”, “Animal” and “Two Steps Behind.” Vault will do well, but as alluded to earli- er, the fans must be wondering about Def Leppard's strategy. Soulshack feels like the soundtrack from a Spike Lee movie ... it combines rap styles and low frequency teeth rattling bass with early 70s soul. Co-producer Mike says, “There was no formula - if it felt good, we did it. There's hip hop, rock, jazz, folk, Sly Stone to The Beatles.” Musical purists have a hell of a time with so many styles at once, but it's tres amusant. Key tracks: “Funkmobile” and “Why”. If Soulshack is any indi- cation, then Chin, Ivana and Mystic have a bright, wide future. sans" Christmas Market is Thurs- day, Friday and Saturday Nov. 30- Dec. 3 at the Civic Centre in Nelson.
