wil lary As the weather gets more seasonable and we pass the Canada Day holiday the number of golfers out for the retirees weekly round at the upper course increases. On Tuesday there were 60 and 64 last week. It would not be too surprising to see our numbers soar into the 70s as summer arrives. . This week, with Ferro Pellegrin and Red Ius on desk there were not too many surprises, just a good round of golf for all who took part. In the low gross competition it was Roger McKeown taking the ball with a 39, low net was won by Joe 1.anier who had a 29 and in the least putts competition, Matt Mattson had just 11 to get that prize. Bill Dobbs was closest to the pin on no.5 and in the hidden hole department it was Tim Jenkin taking low and Garth Barnes the high. Both were played on no. 7. , Next week's competition will see Tom Dobie and Bill Woodburn on the desk and you'll find out all the competition details when you arrive at the clubhouse. Breakfast or lunch is available and as usual, it will be good and the price won't put too much of a dent in your bankroll. So save the good wife from getting your breakfast or lunch on Tuesday and plan to eat with the boys. See you there! After my last round I was dragging my feet for the last three holes and I saw a doctor who told me to lay off for a week. I had a little puffiness around ankles and he said maybe a rest might straighten it out and it seems to have done the trick. So I'll be back again next week and see how it feels. Well, I finally get to see one of the Legion Royals games on Monday night and wasn't disappointed, the boys vanquished their rivals, Hooch's.Scrap 25-19, lots of runs but lots of sparkling plays were the order of the day, sometimes as many as 5 runs in an inning by each team. I don't know if the Royals had all their players out for the game or not, all I counted were nine, but I could have missed some of them. However when we sat down afterwards Corinne McFarland wrote down the names of all who were present. She gave me 10 names and one of them was Kirk Oliver. I don't know if Kirk plays for the Royals or not, he was dressed as though he came to watch. Anyway, the ones Corinne named were Rob Harasin, Greg Richards, Walter Rosner, Wayne Shubert, Greg Waite, Marty Brown, Sam Manson, and Dan and John McFarland. The team is now 13-0 and look as though they could easily wind up the season that way. I think seven more games are to be played before the seasonal playoffs begin. This slow-pitch ball is really supposed to be for guys whose reflexes are not quite as sharp as they were at one time but from what I saw on Monday night some of these guys don't have too much trouble hitting the ball. The way they get around the bases reminds me when some of the same guys were playing the faster game. ~ I don't remember all of the Scrap players but quite a number of them have taken part in ball, one brand or another: Ken Dixon, Clare Anderson, Mark Rusten, Bobby Profili, Pete Bourchier, to name the ones that come to mind right now. I see that preparations are taking shape for getting help in the running of the Little League championships to be played in Trail on Aug. 15-22. Three games are to be played on Aug. 19 and there will be 15 games in the tournament in the series. Our Legion branch has been asked to help with silver collections and the 50-50 draws at games Aug. 19 under the auspices of the Trail branch. We do not anticipate any trouble handling this chore for our Trail friends on an occasion such as this. Well, with what remains of the slo-pitch season in Rossland and golf, most of the other sports in town are getting to the time of year when they take a rest during the hot months to come and. return to more competition in the fall. Minor league soccer has now folded until September when they will start again as have numerous other forms of activity which require a lot of running. In the hot sunny weather this is sometimes a little much for the youngsters. Most of the games that will continue will have most of their activity in the evening hours. And now, with time running out, I think I'll fold this one up and say, 'Til next time, then!
