Distributed by Los Angeles Times Syndicate. Astrology is the liveliest corpse | know. ‘From the time | was a youngster in a Philadelphia grammar school, | was ‘taught that astrology was a “fossil science.” Teachers seemed never to tire of repeating that “astrology is a pseudo-science, ‘a fossil, long gone, dead and buried, not taken seriously in this day and age.” Something inside me, from the age of 12, kept me'from fully accepting that dictum. Maybe it was a child's fascination with forbidden fruit. Perhaps it;was the expression, real or imagined, on the teacher's face as the hurriedly skipped over the word “astrology.” Whatever, or whoever, was at work, was laying the groundwork that. would lead a doubttul, curious, basically shy boy along a path that would be instrumental in causing the “corpse” to be alive-and-kicking and to change the direction of modern thinking in relation to the cosmos. ‘Yedrs later, when the likes of Aldous Huxley, Henry Mil- ler, Lawrence Durrell, Anais Nin and numerous other scien- tific and literary luminaries, along with the glamor and glitter of leading».men and women of Hollywood, would encourage and consult me, I would recall the | 11-year-old, listening pbediently as astrol- ogy. was being vilified. *}I started looking for an- swérs very early, While my playmates received books u- - bout Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck, my favorite reading was, material on the life of Joe Louis. The Brown Bomber was beginning to make’ his own history in the fight game. Years later (as noted in Part One) Joe would be instru- mental, in an indirect way, in .my success. I was Leo showman early and all the way. I would wind up a right hand and bloody a nose when someone knocked ‘astrology. =] I didn't find answers in classrooms. I felt, as I delved véraciously into astrology béoks, that the answers were up there somehow, in the sky. :Wolff Goldberg, principal of Holmes Junior High School, took me aside. “Young man,” he said, “I am going to suspend ‘you from classes unless you get to work here. Where is your mind?” “Dr. Goldberg had a per- me, sent for my parents and loaded me with extra home work. But my, mind, as he perceived it, continued to wan- der aimlessly, “I do study,” 1 insisted to him. “I mean school study," he shot back. “Not your astrology nonsense!” * “Let. me do. your hor- oscope," I responded. “If you still think it’s a fake, I'll start getting straight A's in class, I'll put astrology aside,” That night, after figuring Dr. Goldberg's planets and numbers, I typed five pages of my findings. The next morning I left the manuscript in his office, in a plain, brown enve- lope. % . For the next three days Dr. Goldberg offered only si- .lence when he encountered me as he prowled the school halls. On the fourth. day, I was summoned to his office. “Young man,” he said, “my wife says that all the bad things you said about me are true, And I feel that all the good things you wrote are true.” He smiled. “So, in a way, you were one hundred per cent right.” + 1 was elated. I would pursue the answers — in the sky. By the time I was 16, I was going to school in the day and performing « magic act on stages and in night clubs at night. Astrology had no part in my performance. I was making Next week in the fourth famous and his objects appear, disappear, float, doing sleight-of-hand, get- ting applause by making minia- ture billiard balls appear, mul- Uply and vanish. . : Occasionally, when the audience seemed. friendly, . I would include astrology and the zodiacal signs in my patter. ‘There was always a response. “My old lady is a Scorpion — she’s got some sting.” “If you know so much,” a lady's voice jeered, “let me come and see you after the show.” Another feminine voice: “I'm Geinini — riever rely on Gemini.” After the hilarity had - subsided, i wouid coniinue with my regular magic routine. I was attending classes during the day, writing articles in the afternoons, performing my shows at night and during the early morning hours. The featured acts usually were strip-teasers, fan dancers: names such as Ann Corio, Sally Keith, Sally Rand, Hindu Was- sau. . Later, I would appear on national! television with Gypsy Rose Lee, but her stripping days were finished. She now was a part of the legitimate theatre and literary worlds. Here are a few suggestions from the experts at Allied Boating Association of Canada to help you broaden your boating horizons: * On the highway, slow down, especially with a heavy boat, in tow.
