The unfortunate thing about the album is that it reveals that The Who as a band hasn't done anything of note since the in Who's Next release. As with the over- done rock opera Tommy, The Who seem to be cashing in on past glories. The steam seems to have gone out of Peter Townshend in recent years, and {although passing. fans alike. Included on the set are My Gener- ation, Happy Jack, I Can See For Miles, and of course Tommy. A surprise omission is Pictures of Lily, perhaps the bands most powerful statement on adolescent sex- uality. A 20-page booklet in- cludes a brief written history as well as numerous photo- graphs, depicting mad man ‘Keith Moon's progression from a 10. -plece drum set to the 1979 Hot nuff fer “ya? By the time this appears in print, | may be looking through drawers for my longjohns. That would be typical of the weather in this Canada of ours, But as I write, holed up in ‘my study with the drapes drawn and the fan blowing, we're wellsinto the second week of one of those scor- ching summer sessions that we masochists in this country endure and even enjoy, ina perverted way. We ‘suffer, but we suffer with a certain pride. One wilted citizen will say to he sometimes detroyed, and ‘Townshend's patented leaps across stage. The booklet makes an interesting statement saying it was ‘not the Beatles, but the Who that reshaped the social consciousness of the sixties. The Beatles were primarily a writing band whereas the Who excelled as writers and performers. Today, musicians have distorted that concept to the point where the visual per- i is the the Who By and Who Are‘ You were an attempt by Townshend to extend from Who's Next the evolvement of adolescent hard times to the problems of adulthood,. it resulted in usually forgetable material. Townshend's Rough Mix album, a collaboration with ex-faces member Ronnie Lane, was an example of what he is still capable of doing. Performing with The Who, Townshend Seems to ti not the music, Over 10 years ago, The Who would proceed to des-. troy their instrument and stage props at the end of performances, and built, a reputation as the tour de force for hotel destruction around the world. Six months ago, and _ six months from now, we'll be doing the opposite, ducking from one over-heated place to another, about the cold. I wonder if there is another nation in the world that talks’ as much about the weather as does ours. I doubt it. Perhaps it is because we are rather shy and inarticulate, when is comes to opening a cieties status-quo, and‘ as years wore on The Who i the dful 30- P develop new avenues, tae much so that his music suffers as a result. The Kids Are Alright is an excellent collectors item, for Who diehards, or just age bracket and songs like Won't Get Fooled Again spoke of the capeatone and . Canadians know, without being told, that if a winter week has been sunny and sparkling, it’s going to snow and blow on the weekend. They are positive that, if the summer has been ‘ideal, . warm and dry and delightful so far, it will be cold and wet when it’s their turn to goon holidays. The weather is so much a part of our national’ psyche that it’s a wonder it hasn't crept int politics. On second thought, it has.
